INDICATOR DESCRIPTION
This indicator “Volume of freight transport relative to gross domestic product” is defined as the ratio between tonne-kilometres (inland transport only) and gross domestic product (chain-linked volumes, at 2015 exchange rates). It is indexed on 2015. It includes transport by road, rail and inland waterways. Road, rail and inland waterways transport are based on movements on national territory, regardless of the nationality of the vehicle or vessel.
From 2023 onwards, the indicator for all EU countries is calculated according to a slightly changed methodology, namely the changed unit. Now is Index (2015 = 100). Until 2023, the unit was Index (2010 = 100).
