This indicator is defined as the mean annual BOD5 in rivers. BOD5 is a measure of the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to decompose organic substances in a water sample over a period of five days in the dark at 20°C.

INDICATOR DESCRIPTION
This indicator is defined as the mean annual BOD5 in rivers. BOD5 is a measure of the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to decompose organic substances in a water sample over a period of five days in the dark at 20°C. It is a measure of the quality of water: the lower the value of BOD5, the higher the water quality.

The indicator can also be used to complement the monitoring of goal 15.
