Fewer live births than deaths in all months of 2024
Compared to December 2023, the number of live births went up by 1% and the number of deaths down by 14%. A natural decrease was recorded in the final month of last year: according to provisional data, 547 more people died than were born. In all months of 2024 natural decrease was recorded.
The number of live births up
In the final month of last year, 1,302 children were born in Slovenia, which was 18 or 1% more than in December 2023. On average 42 children were born per day (compared to 41 in the same month of 2023).
According to provisional data about 16,600 children were born from January to December 2024, which was 2% fewer than in the previous year. Due to late administrative processing of some births, the final number of births is expected to be higher.
Fewer number of deaths
In the observed month, 1,849 residents of Slovenia died. This was 303 (14%) fewer than in December last year. On average 60 people died each day (nine fewer than in December 2023).
According to provisional data for 2024, slightly more than 21,400 people died, which was almost 1% fewer than a year before and 5% fewer than in 2022.
What do data for January 2025 indicate?
According to the first estimate, 1,271 residents of Slovenia died between 1 and 19 January 2025. In the same period of last year, the number was higher (1.287 residents).
