High growth of tourism consumption in Slovenia after the pandemic

Total tourism expenditure in Slovenia strongly increased again after the pandemic. In 2022, it amounted to EUR 5,640 million and in 2023 to EUR 6,561 million, which is nominal 16.3% growth compared to the previous year’s value. Other components of tourism consumption were estimated at EUR 83 million and EUR 89 million, respectively; total internal tourism consumption was thus estimated at EUR 5,723 million in 2022 and EUR 6,650 million in 2023. In both years, expenditure of foreign visitors represented around 63% of total tourism expenditure, amounting to EUR 3,537 million in 2022 and to EUR 4,108 million in 2023.

Increase in tourism expenditure of foreign visitors

Expenditure of foreign visitors increased again in the period after the pandemics. Expenditure of foreign tourists, i.e. visitors with at least one overnight, represented 42% in 2022 and in 2023 its share increased to 44% of total expenditure of foreign visitors (they represented EUR 1,499 million in 2022 and EUR 1,813 million in 2023). Expenditure of same-day visitors (excursionists or transit guests) represented 58% and 56%, respectively (EUR 2,038 million in 2022 and EUR 2.295 million in 2023). Compared to the previous year, expenditure of foreign tourists increased by 20.9% and expenditure of same-day visitors by 12.6%. Total expenditure of foreign visitors thus increased in nominal terms by 16.1%.

Tourism expenditure of domestic residents in Slovenia stays at similar level

Tourism expenditure of domestic residents in Slovenia comprises expenditure on the domestic trips and the domestic part of expenditure on the trips abroad. Expenditure on the domestic trips was in 2022 estimated at EUR 1,800 million and in 2023 at EUR 2,009 million, representing 86% and 82% of total expenditure of domestic visitors, respectively. Out of this, expenditure of tourists represented in both years around 47%, and expenditure of same-day visitors around 53%. The domestic part of expenditure on the trips abroad amounted to EUR 303 million in 2022 and increased to EUR 443 million in 2023, representing 14% and 18%, respectively, of total expenditure of domestic visitors in Slovenia.

Increase in tourism expenditure of domestic residents abroad

Tourism expenditure of domestic residents abroad increased with the revival of international tourism and the increase in domestic residents travelling abroad after the pandemic. It was estimated at EUR 1,711 million in 2022 and EUR 2,617 million in 2023. Expenditure of domestic residents for travels abroad amounted together with the domestic part of expenditure for these trips to EUR 2,014 million in 2022 and to EUR 3,060 million in 2023.

Tourism value added and tourism gross domestic product (GDP)

Tourism consumption represented 3.3% of total supply of goods and services in the economy in 2022, which was still a lower share than before the pandemic, in 2023 its share increased to 3.7%. Based on the calculation of the shares that domestic producers have in the supply of individual groups of tourism products, tourism (direct) value added was calculated. It amounted to EUR 1,861 million in 2022, representing 3.7% of total value added in the economy, and increased to EUR 2,156 million in 2023, representing 3.8% of total value added.

In addition to value added, tourism (direct) GDP comprises also net taxes on expenditures for tourism goods and services. Taking into account all taxes paid as a consequence of tourism consumption, tourism GDP amounted to EUR 2,871 million in 2022 and EUR 3,333 million in 2023, representing 5.0% and 5.2% of total GDP in Slovenia, respectively.

Total, direct and indirect effects of tourism consumption

In addition to direct effects, tourism consumption has also indirect effects on the increase in output, value added and GDP, since tourism consumption triggers demand also in other parts of the economy supplying goods and services for the production of tourism products (multiplier effects). With the increase in output, incomes of households are also increased and they further trigger demand and consumption. The calculated total value added that was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 3,519 million in 2022 and EUR 4,089 million in 2023 or 7.0% and 7.2%, respectively, of total value added in the economy. The calculated total GDP that was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 4,714 million in 2022 and EUR 5,478 in 2023 or 8.3% and 8.6%, respectively, of GDP in the economy.
