Fewer births, more deaths

According to provisional data for February 2022, 1,251 children were born (6% fewer than a year before) and 2,125 people died (14% more than a year before).

Fewer live births

1,251 children were born (80 or 6% fewer than in February 2021). On average 45 children were born per day (48 in February 2021).

More deaths

2,125 people died. This is 268 (14%) more than in February 2021 and 28 (1%) more than in January 2022. On average 76 people died each day in February 2022 (66 people per day died on average in February 2021).

Excess mortality

Excess mortality (i.e. excess number of deaths compared to the average number of deaths in February in 2015–2019) was 14%.
1,567 people aged 75 or more died in Slovenia in February 2022 (74% of all deaths). The number of deceased at that age was 23% higher than the average number of deceased of the same age in 2015–2019.

What do data for March show us?

According to the first estimate, 1,325 people died between 1 and 20 March 2022. In the same period of 2021, 1,264 people died.
Provisional data for March 2022 will be published on 6 May 2022.

Data publication

In response to the increased needs of users for up-to-date data, the Statistical Office started to publish monthly data on deaths and live births by days. In the SiStat Database, the already existing tables on live births and deaths by days are being updated monthly.
Eurostat continuously publishes provisional data on the number of deaths by weeks by countries. Slovenia provides provisional data monthly.
The National Institute of Public Health is publishing daily changes in the number of deaths with COVID-19 (in Slovene only).
