Natural decrease and positive net migration
According to provisional data for the 4th quarter of 2021, natural decrease of population (−2,073) and positive net migration (545) were recorded.
More live births and fewer deaths
Between October and December 2021, 4,647 live births and 6,720 deaths were recorded in Slovenia. Compared to the same period of 2020, the number of live births was 166 (4%) higher, and the number of deaths was 1,716 (20%) lower. In a year, the value of natural decrease was halved: from −7.5 per 1,000 population to −3.9 per 1,000 population.
More marriages and more divorces
In the last three months of 2021, 780 couples were married or 69 (10%) more than in the same period of 2020 and 567 couples were divorced or 169 (42%) more than in the same quarter of 2020.
Decrease in internal migration
In the fourth quarter of 2021, 28,092 people migrated internally, 35% fewer than in the same period of 2020. At that time the large number of internal migrations was largely due to the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, as many people chose to change their official residence when movement between municipalities was restricted.
Net migration of Slovenian citizens negative
6,662 residents immigrated to Slovenia in the fourth quarter of 2021, 100 (or 1.5%) more than in the same period of 2020. The number of emigrants increased by 20% to 6,117. The number of emigrated citizens of Slovenia (1,518) was lower than the number of emigrated foreigners (4,599).
Positive net migration was recorded for foreign nationals (1,344 persons). Net migration of Slovene citizens was negative: 799 more emigrated from Slovenia than immigrated to it.
