In basic education, the share of men in management positions twice as high as in all professional staff
In the school/academic year 2021/22, there were 12,486 professional staff in pre-school education, 22,795 in basic education, 7,470 in upper secondary education and 5,540 in tertiary education.
Slightly more pre-school educators and their assistants
12,486 educators and assistant educators were working in kindergartens, which is 5.4% more than in the previous school year. 96.1% of educators were women and only 3.9% were men. 6.1% of kindergarten staff was employed in the private sector. The average number of children per educator was 7.
With larger generations of elementary school children also slightly more teachers
22,795 persons were employed in basic education, 2,951 of them men and 19,844 of them women. Compared to the previous school year, the number went up by 1.6%. The increase can be attributed to the larger generations of elementary school children. The share of men employed in basic education was almost 13%; in management positions 26%.
The number of upper secondary school teachers slightly lower
The number of persons employed in upper secondary schools for youth and adults was 0.5% lower than in the previous school year. Of the 7,470 employees, 6,299 were teachers (66% of them women), 297 were management personnel (58% of them women) and 266 were counsellors (94% of them women). 7,129 staff worked in public and 341 in private upper secondary schools.
At the tertiary level men have on average higher education than their female colleagues
There were 5,540 professional staff at the tertiary level of education, about 2.3% fewer than in the previous academic year.
There were slightly more men (54.9%) than women (45.1%). As regards the level of education, irrespective of gender they were mostly doctors of science. 81.5% of men in employment had 3rd cycle of higher education, while the share for women in employment was 76.4%. The share of employees aged 50+ was also higher for men (43.1%) than for women (37.9%). The number of doctors of science was the highest in the age group 45–49 years.
Professional staff with 3rd cycle of higher education in all types of education
For teaching staff (full and associate professor, assistant professor) at the tertiary level of education, the 3rd cycle of higher education is legally prescribed. At this level, 79.2% of professional staff had this level of education.
However, employees with the 3rd cycle of higher education are found at all levels of education (pre-school, basic and upper secondary education). In past two years their share decreased.
