Passenger cars were on average over 11 years old
At the end of 2023, about 1.2 million passenger cars were registered in Slovenia. The number of first-time registered new passenger cars was 6% higher than in the previous year. The renewal rate of passenger cars increased to 3.9%.

Almost three quarters of motor vehicles were passenger cars
At the end of 2023, over 1.7 million road vehicles were registered in Slovenia. There were almost 1.7 million motor vehicles and 58,000 trailing vehicles. There were about 1.2 million registered passenger cars, representing 74% of all motor vehicles. The number of all these listed types of vehicles increased by 2% over the previous year.
Almost a fifth more first-time registered used passenger cars
According to the balance at the end of 2023, almost 127,000 road vehicles were registered in Slovenia last year for the first time. Compared to the previous year, the number was 9% higher. About 87,000 passenger cars were registered for the first time or 11% more than a year before.
Over 77,000 or 61% of all road vehicles registered for the first time in 2023 were new, i.e. they had not been registered abroad before. The number of first-time registered new road vehicles was 5% higher than a year earlier, while the number of first-time registered new passenger cars was 6% higher. In the same comparison, the number of used cars registered for the first time was 19% higher. The renewal rate of passenger cars increased to 3.9%.
The largest number of first-time registered passenger cars, both new and used, was recorded in March. In December, however, the number of first-time registered used passenger cars exceeded the number of first-time registered new passenger cars.
High increase in first-time registered new electric passenger cars
Almost a half (49%) of registered passenger cars were using diesel and 46% petrol fuel. Compared to 2022, the number of diesel cars remained at the same annual level, while the number of petrol ones went up by 1%. In addition, 3% of passenger cars were hybrids and 1% were electric cars. The number of the former increased by 51% and of the latter by 60%.
As regards new passenger cars registered for the first time, the ratios by type of drive and fuel are different than for all registered passenger cars. Out of all first-time registered new passenger cars in Slovenia in 2023, 23% were hybrid cars and 9% were electric cars. In one year, the number of first registrations of new hybrid passenger cars went up by almost a quarter (24%) and of electric cars by 88%.
The average age of passenger cars in Slovenia exceeded eleven years
One in ten passenger cars was less than three years old, and one in two 12 years old or older.
In 2023, passenger cars registered in Slovenia were on average 11.1 years old. On average, they were the least old in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (10.3 years) and still the oldest in Goriška (12.9 years).
For the first time, we are publishing data on vehicles by category or letter marks
For the first time, we are publishing data on vehicles from the vehicle register by vehicle category, i.e. by official letter designations. Motor vehicles with at least four wheels for transporting passengers (M) accounted for 72% of all vehicles registered in Slovenia at the end of December 2023. 9% were two- or three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles (L), 8% were motor vehicles with at least four wheels for transporting goods (N), 7% were tractors (C, T) and 3% were trailing vehicles (O, R, S).

- There were over 1.7 million registered road vehicles; about 1.2 million of these were passenger cars, i.e. vehicles of category M1.
- More than 48,000 new passenger cars were registered for the first time, 23% of them on hybrid drive.
