Highest recorded number of persons in employment, average age also higher

Compared to November, the number of persons in employment increased by just over 2,800. It went up the most in manufacturing, by 0.8%. In 2023, their average age of was 43.6 years, while the average age of those who were employed for the first time in the observed year was 29.4 years.

Fewer self-employed

There were about 941,300 persons in employment in December, which is 0.3% more than in the previous month. This is the highest number since we started monitoring register-based data on employment. The number of employees increased by just under 2,900 or 0.3%, while the number of self-employed slightly decreased, by 50.

The number of men in employment increased at the monthly level by just over 3,000 or 0.6%, while the number of women in employment decreased slightly, by around 200 or 0.1%.

Compared to December 2022, the number of persons in employment went up by 0.6%. The number of employees increased by 0.4% and the number of self-employed by 2.5%. The number of men and women in employment increased by 0.4% and 1.0%, respectively.

The number of persons in employment up in half of sections of activity

Compared to November, the number of persons in employment increased the most in manufacturing, by just under 1,600 or 0.8%, and in construction, by around 1,000 or 1.3%. In both activities the number went up due to the employment or self-employment of foreign citizens, while the number of Slovenian citizens in employment decreased in both activities.

The largest monthly decrease in the number of persons in employment was recorded in transportation and storage, by around 200 or 0.3%, and in administrative and support service activities, also by around 200 or 0.5%.

Compared to December 2022, the number of persons in employment increased the most in human health and social work activities, by just over 1,800 or 2.5%. On the other hand, it decreased the most in manufacturing, by just under 2,100 or 1.0%.

Higher average age of persons in employment

In 2023, persons in employment were on average 43.6 years old, which is 0.1 year more than in the previous year. The average age of men in employment grew to 43.2 years and the average age of women in employment to 44.0 years.

If we compare persons in employment by groups of citizenships (excluding farmers), we find that foreign citizens in employment are on average younger than citizens of Slovenia. The average age of the former was 39.3 years and of the latter 44.1 years.

Men on average older at first employment 

In 2023, just under 42,400 persons in employment were employed for the first time in Slovenia, which is 7.8% fewer than in 2022. Their average age was 29.4 years. There were just under 27,400 men with first employment, with an average age of 29.7 years, and about 15,000 women who were employed for the first time in Slovenia in the observed year, who were on average 29.0 years old.

According to groups of citizenshps, in 2023, there were more foreign citizens than Slovenian citizens who were employed in Slovenia for the first time in the observed year. There were about 25,100 foreigners, with an average age of 33.1 years, and about 17,300 Slovenian citizens, who were on average 24.1 years old.
