The largest number of employed in the last decade

Compared to 2022, in 2023 there were 0.3% more employed, 9.0% fewer unemployed and a similar number of underemployed. The employment rate went down by 0.2 p.p., the unemployment rate by 0.4 p.p., the long-term unemployment rate by 0.2 p.p. and the very long-term unemployment rate by 0.1 p.p.

More employed than in any year of the last decade

The total number of persons in employment was around 989,000. The number of employed was the highest in the last decade. Compared to 2022, the number of self-employed grew by 3.4% to 123,000, the number of employees stayed at 848,000 and the number of unpaid family workers fell by 3.5% to around 19,000. 
 
There were about 38,000 unemployed persons in 2023. In one year, the number decreased by 9.0%, but this difference is smaller than the decline from the two previous years, marked by the COVID-19 epidemic; in comparison with 2021 by 22.5% and in comparison with 2020 by 27.0%.

Employment and unemployment rates down
 
The unemployment rate fell by 0.4 p.p. to 3.7%. The rate was the highest among persons with basic education or less (8.7%) and the lowest among persons with tertiary education (2.1%).

Similarly, a small decline (by 0.2 p.p. to 56.4%) in the employment rate was observed. The rate was the lowest (23.5%) among persons with basic education or less, but more than three times higher (78.5%) and the highest of all three categories for persons with tertiary education.

Long-term unemployment and very long-term unemployment rates keep falling

The long-term unemployment rate was 1.5%, down by 0.2 p.p. and 0.6 p.p., respectively from 2022 and 2021. The very long-term unemployment rate decreased to 0.7% (by 0.1 p.p. from 2022 and by 0.2 p.p. from 2021).

Underemployed are persons working part-time who would like to work additional hours and are available to do so. In 2023, the estimated number of such persons was around 12,000, which was, as a year earlier, 1.2% of all employed persons. In comparison with the previous year, a small incline of 0.1% was recorded. About two thirds of underemployed were women (67.6%). The difference between the cohesion regions, on the other hand, was much smaller than gender difference (54.8% for vzhodna Slovenija and 45.2% for zahodna Slovenija).
