In 2023, women in Slovenia gave birth to fewer than 17,000 children, the lowest number ever. On average, they gave birth at the age of 31.1 years and first-time mothers at the age of 29.7 years. The employment rate of mothers with two children in Slovenia was among the highest in the EU.
A day dedicated to mothers
The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day spread to Europe from the United States of America after World War II. The date of the celebration varies from country to country. In Slovenia, it is celebrated on 25 March.
The year before last, women gave birth to the fewest children ever
For the first time in the 102-year history of monitoring the number of births, women in Slovenia gave birth to fewer than 17,000 children in 2023, i.e. 16,989 children were born, 8,677 boys and 8,312 girls. Eight children per 1,000 population is the lowest number since 1922. Provisional data for 2024 also show that the number will again be among the lowest ever.
Women are having their first children later and later
For the past five years, i.e. since 2019, the average age of mothers at birth (irrespective of the birth order) has not changed. Women gave birth on average at the age of 31.1 years. The year before last, first-time mothers were 29.7 years old. These were the highest values since we have had these data, i.e. since 1954.
More than half of children born to unmarried women
In 2023, married women gave birth to 7,383 children, and unmarried to 9,606 (56.5%). The number of children born to unmarried women is growing. The fewest children were born to unmarried women in the 1960s (about 9%). Unmarried women gave birth to more children than married women for the first time in 2007, while since 2011 the share has been around 57%. Married women giving birth are usually older than unmarried. In 2023, they were on average 31.3 years old and thus 0.4 of a year older than unmarried women, who were on average 30.9 years old.
When was the largest number of children born?
In 2023, on average 47 children were born per day: during the weekends on average 37 and on workdays (Monday to Friday) 50. The largest number of children (72) was born on Friday, 12 May, and the lowest (24) on Sunday, 17 December.
Most mothers have given birth to two children
According to 2021 data, 24% of women aged 15 or more have not given birth. Among those who have given birth, most had two children (54%), followed by those with one child (27%) and those with three children (15%).
Employment rate of mothers among the highest in the EU
In 2023, the employment rate among mothers in Slovenia aged 18–64 with two children was 86.2%. It was higher only in Sweden (88.7%). The employment rate was also high among women with three children or more ranking Slovenia among the top four EU Member States (Slovenia: 77.5%, EU: 56.8%).
