Number of employed persons at the annual level the highest in the last decade

In 2024, the number of employed persons increased by 0.9% over the previous year. At the annual level, the unemployment rate was 3.7% and stayed almost the same as the year before.

In Slovenia, there were on average 38,000 unemployed persons in 2024 according to survey data, similar to the previous year. The unemployment rate also remained at about the same level, at 3.7%. The number of employed persons increased by 0.9%, to 998,000, which is 9,000 more than in 2023 and the highest number in the last 10 years. The employment rate was 0.2 of a percentage point higher than in the previous year, reaching 56.6%.

The latter expresses the share of employed persons among the working-age population. Compared to the previous year, the employment rate increased the most within the age group 55–64 years (by 2.1 percentage points). Approximately half of young people aged 15–29 were employed. Their employment rate was 49.6%.

Among the unemployed, there were 51.0% men and 49.0% women. Compared to the previous year, the number of inactive persons stayed the same at 728,000. Most of them were students and retirees. 



Among self-employed more men than women

Among employed persons, there were 857,000 employees, 123,000 self-employed and 18,000 family workers. Compared to the previous year, the number of employees went up by 1.1%, and the number of self-employed by 0.6%, while the number of family workers went down by 4.7%. Among self-employed, almost three quarters or 70.1% were men and slightly more than a quarter or 29.9% were women. 

The majority of individuals worked part-time due to education or training

In 2024, among the employees, more than 90% worked full-time, while just under 10% worked part-time, meaning they worked usually less than 36 hours per week.

Among full-time employees, 54.4% were men and 45.6% were women. Among part-time employees, more than two-thirds (68.3%) were women.

Among part-time employees, the most common reason for doing so was education or training.
