Decisions of prosecutors and courts in criminal matters, Slovenia, 2014
The number of convicted natural and legal persons is increasing
9,410 adults, 319 minors and 45 legal persons were convicted in 2014.
Despite the decrease in the number of the convicted in 2014 compared to the previous year, convictions increased
The amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act, which came into force in May 2012, resulted in a significant increase in the number of convictions in 2013 (by 34% compared to the previous year). It enabled the implementation of simplified criminal proceedings and economized the trials. Pre-trial hearings and agreements on the admission of guilt were introduced. According to the number of convictions, 2013 was outstanding and because of this, particular caution in the interpretation and application of these data (for 2013) is needed. In 2014, the number of convicted adult perpetrators was lower than in the previous year, but mostly due to the aforementioned changes in the criminal proceedings. Table 1 (index 2014/2012) shows the upward trend in the number of convicted adults.
Economic crime receives its epilogue in courtrooms
The number of convictions for offences in the field of economic crime increased significantly during the 2010-2014 period. This applies both to the convictions of natural persons, as well as to the convictions of legal persons. 60% of all legal persons’ convictions are represented by only two offenses, namely business fraud and violation of basic rights of employees.
Domestic violence among the most commonly sentenced offences of adult perpetrators
For natural persons, the majority of convictions (56%) are represented by more crimes. Theft and grand larceny are followed by fraud, undue production of and traffic in narcotic drugs, forgery of documents and simple assault. Among the most frequent crimes was also domestic violence.Table 1: Convicted adults and juveniles, Slovenia
