With 7.8% in the 1st quarter of 2017 the LFS unemployment rate lower again
In the 1st quarter of 2017 there were 79,000 unemployed persons in Slovenia, 2.5% fewer than in the previous quarter and 9.2% fewer than in the 1st quarter of 2016. The number of employed persons was higher by 41,000 (by 4.6%) compared to the same quarter of 2016.
In the 1st quarter of 2017 the number of employed persons in Slovenia was 935,000,
i.e. 11,000 higher than in the previous quarter and 41,000 higher than in the 1st quarter of 2016. Among employed persons the number of employees in permanent employment increased by 5.3% (to 663,000) over the same period of the previous year. Among 141,000 temporarily employed persons there were 30,000 student workers (by 15.7% more) and 14,000 other agency workers (by 27.6% more). There were 108,000 self-employed, i.e. 3,000 fewer than in the 1st quarter of 2016.
There were 79,000 unemployed persons, 2,000 (by 2.5%) fewer than in the 4th quarter of 2016. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2016 there were 8,000 (by 9.2%) fewer unemployed persons in the 1st quarter of 2017. The number of inactive persons in the 1st quarter of 2017 was 743,000; 33,000 (by 4.3%) lower than a year ago.
The LFS unemployment rate was 7.8% in the 1st quarter of 2017,
i.e. 0.3 of a percentage point lower than in the 4th quarter of 2016 and 1.1 percentage points lower than in the 1st quarter of 2016. Compared to the same period of 2016, in the 1st quarter of 2017 the unemployment rate decreased among men (from 8.4% to 7.5%) as well as among women (from 9.4% to 8.2%).
In the 1st quarter of 2017 the employment rate was 53.2%, and thus by 2.4 percentage points higher than in the 1st quarter of 2016. It was higher among men than among women; however, the employment rate grew more among women (from 46.3% to 48.8%) than among men (from 55.5% to 57.7%).
The activity rate was 57.7% (by 1.9 percentage points higher than a year ago).
Almost two thirds of persons unemployed in the 1st quarter of 2017 were unemployed also in the last quarter of 2016
Nevertheless, the long-term unemployment rate (share of unemployed looking for work for one year or more among active population) has been decreasing. In the 1st quarter of 2017 it was 3.7%, while a year ago it was 4.9% and in the 1st quarter of 2015 5.3%.
20% (or 16,000) unemployed persons in the 1st quarter of 2017 had been inactive in the quarter before, while 17% (or 14,000) had been employed in the 4th quarter of 2016. 20,000 persons unemployed in the 4th quarter of 2016 became employed in the 1st quarter of 2017. The fewest changes in the status of activity between the two quarters happened among inactive persons (due to a large number of retired persons).
