On 1 January 2018 Slovenia had a population of 2,066,880 or 985 more than one year earlier. The number of Slovene citizens decreased while the number of foreign citizens increased and reached 5.9%.

Fewer citizens of Slovenia, more foreign citizens

According to the Statistical Office of Slovenia, the population of Slovenia increased by 990 in the fourth quarter of 2017. The number of citizens of Slovenia decreased by more than 1,250 (0.1%), while the number of foreign citizens increased by nearly  2,250 (1.9%). On 1 January 2018 the 121,875  foreign citizens represented 5.9% of Slovenia’s population.


Increasing share of women among foreign citizens

On 1 January 2018 the population of Slovenia consisted of 1,027,041 men and 1,039,839 women. The share of women among citizens of Slovenia was 51.3% (this share has been slowly decreasing for a number of years); among foreign citizens there were 35.3% women (their share has increased by 2,5 percentage points in the last four years).
