Forestry accounts, Slovenia, 2017
Gross value added in forestry amounted to EUR 267 million or 0.6% of gross domestic product in 2017
In 2017 the value of forestry production amounted to EUR 552 million, which was a 1% increase compared to the previous year. The reason for that were a volume increase of forestry products and high value of forestry services due to the rehabilitation of damaged forests.
Factor income, which amounted to EUR 184 million, increased by 7% over the previous year
In 2017 the values of income categories in Slovenia increased in comparison with the previous year. The share of gross value added of forestry in gross domestic product amounted to 0.6% of GDP. Factor income increased by 7%; it amounted to EUR 184 million. Factor income per employee increased by 11% compared with the previous year and amounted to EUR 25,411 per employee. Income was influenced by somewhat higher value of forestry production (higher by 1%), lower value of intermediate consumption (by 5%) and lower employment (by 3%).
Forestry production value higher due to the volume and higher prices
In 2017 the value of forestry production amounted to EUR 552 million, which was a 1% increase compared to the previous year. The reason for that were a volume increase of forestry products and high value of forestry services; values were high due to the higher value of wood increment of forests available for wood supply, which is part of the total forestry production, and due to the worse weather conditions and consequently still quite extensive rehabilitation of damaged forests due to the multiplication of bark in 2017, which affected the intensive provision of forestry services. After extensive damage to forests in 2014 due to the ice storm and the multiplication of bark in 2015 and 2016, it continued in 2017 on a slightly smaller scale.
The value of sawlogs and veneer logs was estimated at EUR 161 million in 2017; this was 29% of the total production value in that year or 5 p. p. less than in the previous year. The decrease in the production value by 13% was the result of the volume decrease by 17% and the prices increase by 6%. The production values were higher for pulpwood (by 1%) and fuelwood (by 3%).
High share of forestry services in forestry production value
Value of forestry goods accounted for 86% of the total forestry production (around EUR 470 million). In the structure of forestry goods value the highest shares accounted for the value of wood increment in forests available for wood supply (standing timber) (50%) and sawlogs (34%) in 2017. Share of forestry services accounted for 15% of the total production, ie. 1 p. p. less than in 2016; the value of forestry services amounted to EUR 80 million.
Production costs lower in 2017
The value of the intermediate consumption – it amounted to around EUR 285 million - was lower in 2017, mainly due to the lower value of removals in the production process (it is evaluated by the average wood stumpage price). Due to the forest rehabilitation from the multiplication of bark in 2017, approximately 30% higher removals, about 5 million m3, was observed in comparison with the years before ice storm (2013), but lower than in 2016. In comparison with the previous year the values of forestry services (by 9%) and energy consumption (by 1%) also decreased.
Employment slightly lower
In 2017, 7,232 employees were involved in the forestry production, 3% less than in 2016. Most of them were self-employed (5,860 or slightly less than in the previous year). Besides the self-employed, 1,371 paid employees were also involved in the forestry production, which was 12% less than in 2016.
Main agregates of the economic accounts for forestry, Slovenia
1) Gross value = forestry output - intermediate consumption. 2) Net value added = gross value added - fixed capital consumption. 3) Factor income = net value added - other taxes on production + other subsidies on production. 4) Operating surplus/Mixed income = factor income - compensation of employees. 5) Entrepreneurial income = operating surplus/mixed income - rents paid - interest paid + interest received. 6) AWU = annual work unit. Main agregates of the forest accounts, Slovenia
1) At the beginning of the year. 2) At the end of the year. 3) Calculation of the forest area for 2017 does not match due to the change of the state border on the basis of arbitration between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Croatia. Within these changes, the forest area has decreased. 4) Wood stumpage prices have been recalculated for the period of 1995-2015 on the basis of the production costs estimation. Data time series have been revised for Standing timber (from 1995 on), Maintenance of material (from 2014 on), Fixed capital consumption (from 2014 on) and Employment (from 2014 on) due to the methodological adjustment. Wood stumpage prices have been recalculated for the period of 1995-2015 due to the change of the administrative data source to provide comparable time series.
