Lučka (popsicle) Kornet (ice cream cone) - a combination of a name and family name that does not exist in Slovenia

Germany is the largest ice cream producer in the EU-27. Slovenia imported the most ice cream from Germany (1,900 tonnes), while exports of ice cream to this country were even larger (4,200 tonnes).

How much ice cream do we eat?
In 2018, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average 3.9 litres of ice cream, which is 1.6 litres more than in 2000. This amount includes only ice cream that an individual ate at home, not e.g. in a confectionery. Expenditure on ice cream represented on average 0.18% of total household expenditure in 2018 or EUR 38 per household.

How much does it cost?
In 2020, a litre of ice cream in retail trade cost on average EUR 3.50, the year before EUR 3.31. The cost of a portion of ice cream with whipped cream in a restaurant also increased in 2020 compared to 2019. In 2019 it amounted to EUR 4.69 and in 2020 to EUR 4.91.

The prices of ice cream compared to food prices have not changed significantly. At the end of 2020, food was on average 9.4% more expensive than the average for 2015. In the same period, the price of ice cream in retail trade rose by 0.1%.

1,200 Olympic-size swimming pools of ice cream
In 2019, the EU-27 Member States produced more than 3 billion litres of ice cream, which is 6% more than in 2018. This amount of ice cream could fill almost 1,200 Olympic-size swimming pools in Kranj (50m x 25m x 2.2m). Among the Member States, Germany was the largest producer of ice cream in 2019, producing 635 million litres of ice cream. Italy came in second (554 million litres of ice cream) and France (516 million litres of ice cream) third.

Slovenian ice cream in the world
In 2020, Slovenia imported almost 6,000 tonnes of ice cream worth EUR 16 million and exported four times as much, almost 24,000 tonnes or EUR 70 million. Most ice cream was exported to the United Kingdom (over 6,200 tonnes), followed by exports to Germany and Denmark. Most ice cream was imported from Germany (1,900 tonnes).

Ice cream names
Names associated with ice cream can also be found among the residents of Slovenia. At the beginning of 2021, there were 561 women named Lučka (popsicle) and 29 residents with the family name Kornet (ice cream cone). The combination of these two does not exist in Slovenia.
