GDP down in all statistical regions except Posavska
Compared to 2019, in 2020 GDP decreased the most in Gorenjska (by 8.0%) and in Obalno-kraška (by 8.9%). The regional differences in GDP per capita in Slovenia in 2020 were the highest in the last twenty years. Employment decreased in both cohesion regions.
Growth of GDP only in Posavska
In 2020, GDP in Slovenia was estimated at EUR 46,918 million. This was a 3.1% nominal decrease over 2019. GDP grew only in Posavska (by 0.3%), and decreased in all other statistical regions. The highest decrease was recorded in Gorenjska (by 8.0%) and Obalno-kraška (by 8.9%). In Osrednjeslovenska, which generated the highest GDP, it decreased by 0.8%.
Osrednjeslovenska generated more than 38% of the gross value added
Statistical regions generated a different volume of gross value added (GVA) in 2020. Osrednjeslovenska generated 38.1% of total GVA generated in Slovenia, followed by Podravska and Savinjska, the shares of which were 12.7% and 10.9%, respectively. The other nine statistical regions lag far behind as their shares of GVA range from 1.5% to 8.4%.
The share of Osrednjeslovenska in total GVA generated by services was almost 45.5%. The shares of GVA generated by agricultural and forest activities were the highest in Podravska (13.4%), Savinjska (13.2%) and Jugovzhodna Slovenija (12.8%). The shares of GVA generated by industry were the highest in Osrednjeslovenska (25.7%) and Savinjska (14.3%) regions.
Regional differences in GDP per capita the highest since 2000
The differences between the gross domestic product per capita of individual regions and the Slovenian average are large. In 2020, GDP per capita ranged from 54.6% of the national average in Zasavska to 144.2% in Osrednjeslovenska. The difference between the most and the least successful region was 89.6 p.p. and increased in comparison to 2019, when it was 87.9 p.p. GDP per capita in Osrednjeslovenska amounted to EUR 32,168, which is 2.6 times more than GDP per capita in Zasavska (EUR 12,174). The difference was the highest since these data started to be monitored in 2000.
Employment lower than in 2019, the share of the compensation of employees in GDP higher
The national accounts estimate that there were 1,039,776 employed persons in Slovenia in 2020, which is 0.6% fewer than in 2019. In the Zahodna Slovenija cohesion region there were 554,002 employed persons, which is 0.5% fewer than in 2019. In the Vzhodna Slovenija cohesion region there were 485,774 employed persons, which is 0.7% fewer than in 2019.
In 2020, the share of the compensation of employees in Slovenia increased by 3 p.p. to 53.8% of GDP. In both cohesion regions it increased by 3 percentage points. In Zahodna Slovenija it went up to 54.7% of its GDP and in Vzhodna Slovenija to 52.6% of its GDP.
