The price level for consumer goods and services in Slovenia in 2019 at 88% of the EU-27 average
In 2019 the prices of consumer electronics in Slovenia were 2% higher than the EU-27 average, while the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco and of restaurants and hotels were 18% and 15%, respectively, lower than the EU-27 average.
Eurostat published the results of the comparison of the price levels for consumer goods and services for 37 European countries.
Price levels for Slovenia for consumer goods and services lower than the EU-27 average
A price comparison among European countries shows that price level indices for consumer goods and services consumed by households in Slovenia in 2019 amounted to 88% of the EU-27 average.
Price levels differed widely across the observed European countries in 2019. The highest price level was recorded in Switzerland (62% above the EU-27 average) and the lowest in Turkey (53% below the EU-27 average). Among the EU-27 Member States, Denmark and Ireland (by 41% and 34% above the EU-27 average) had the highest price levels. The lowest price level was recorded in Bulgaria (47% below the EU-27 average).
The price level for the group “consumer electronics”, which includes audio-visual, photographic and information processing equipment, was in Slovenia in 2019 2% higher than the EU-27 average. The price level for the group “clothing” was in Slovenia the same as the EU-27 average, while the price level for the group “food and non-alcoholic beverages” almost reached the EU-27 average. The price levels for the groups “alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “restaurants and hotels” were 18% and 15%, respectively, lower than the EU-27 average.
Neighbouring country comparison of the price levels for groups of consumer goods and services
A neighbouring country comparison of the price levels in groups of consumer goods and services shows that prices in Hungary and Croatia were on average lower than in Slovenia (by 26% and 19%, respectively), while price levels in Austria and Italy were on average higher than in Slovenia (by 28% and 17%, respectively).
The difference in prices between the neighbouring countries was among the observed groups of consumer goods and services most significant in the group "restaurants and hotels". The prices of these services in Austria and Italy were higher than in Slovenia by 31% and 21%, respectively, while in Croatia and Hungary they were lower by 4% and 27%, respectively. Prices were also significantly different in the group “food and non-alcoholic beverages”: higher in Austria and Italy by 29% and 14%, respectively, and lower in Hungary by 11%. The prices in the group of "consumer electronics" in Slovenia were most similar to prices in the neighbouring countries.
