In 2020, domestic tourists generated almost two thirds of all tourist overnight stays in Slovenia
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, in 2020, the tourism flow in Slovenia was stunted. Tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 58% of the tourist overnight stays recorded in 2019. Half of all tourist overnight stays in 2020 were generated in only two months – July and August.
In 2020, 9.2 million tourist overnight stays in Slovenia
In 2020, just over 3 million tourist arrivals (51% fewer than in 2019) and 9.2 million overnight stays (42% fewer than in 2019) were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments in Slovenia.
While domestic tourists generated almost 1.9 million arrivals (21% more than in 2019) and almost 5.9 million overnight stays (33% more than in 2019), foreign tourists generated 1.2 million arrivals (74% fewer than in 2019) and almost 3.4 million overnight stays (71% fewer than in 2019).
A half of all tourist overnight stays in 2020 recorded in July and August
In July and August together 4.6 million overnight stays were recorded, two thirds of them by domestic tourists in each month (almost 1.4 million in July and almost 1.7 million in August). Most foreign overnight stays in these months were generated by tourists from Germany (223,000 in July and 283,000 in August).

In 2020, the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded by tourists from Germany (24% or 814,000 overnight stays, which is 47% fewer than in 2019).
They were followed by tourists from Austria (11% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 63% fewer than in 2019), Italy (11% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 72% fewer than in 2019), Croatia (7% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 58% fewer than in 2019) and Hungary (5% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 63% fewer than in 2019).
Among types of municipalities, the highest drop of overnight stays in 2020 in municipality Ljubljana
In 2020, the highest number of overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts, 2.8 million (31% of all overnight stays) or 39% fewer than in 2019, followed by health (spa) resorts, where almost 2.3 million overnight stays were recorded (24% of all overnight stays) or 35% fewer than in 2019. Seaside resorts recorded 2.2 million overnight stays (24% of all overnight stays) or 26% fewer than in 2019. Approximately 540,000 overnight stays were recorded in municipality Ljubljana (6% of all overnight stays) or 76% fewer than in 2019.
While domestic tourists generated the most overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (31% of domestic overnight stays), foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays in mountain resorts (38% of foreign overnight stays).
The most overnight stays in 2020 recorded in municipality Piran
In 2020, (domestic and foreign) tourists generated the most overnight stays in municipality Piran (almost 1.3 million overnight stays or 14% of all overnight stays). 2.3 million overnight stays (25 % of all tourist overnight stays) were generated in the Obalno-kraška statistical region.
Following Piran, more than 500,000 overnight stays in 2020 were recorded in Kranjska Gora (7% of all tourist overnight stays) and in Ljubljana (6%).
While domestic tourists generated most of their overnight stays in municipalities Piran (15%), Kranjska Gora (7%) and Izola (6%), foreign tourist generated most of their overnight stays in municipalities Ljubljana (14%), Piran (12%) and Bled (9%).
In 2020, only tourist farms with accommodation kept the number of overnight stays at the level recorded in 2019
The most tourist overnight stays in 2020 were recorded in hotels, almost 3.6 million overnight stays (39% of all overnight stays in 2020). In addition, over a million tourist overnight stays were recorded in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (2.2 million overnight stays or 24% of all overnight stays) and in camping sites (1.4 million overnight stays or 15% of all overnight stays).
Tourist farms with accommodation recorded approximately 250,000 overnight stays in 2020, which is approximately the same as in 2019, only the share between domestic and foreign tourists was reversed; in 2019, foreign tourists generated 79% of all overnight stays at tourist farms with accommodations, while in 2020 their share dropped to 25%.
Compared to 2019, the highest overnight stays drop in 2020 was recorded in youth hostels (61% fewer overnight stays than in 2019). In hotels the drop was 51%, in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings 31% and in camping sites 30%.
In 2020, almost 165,000 permanent bedplaces in accommodation establishments available to tourists or 2% fewer than in 2019
In 2020, 34% of all permanent bedplaces were available in hotels and similar accommodation establishments, 18% in camping sites and 48% in other accommodation establishments.
Tourists could choose between almost 62,000 indivisible units in accommodation establishments: 42% were available in hotels and similar accommodation establishments, 17% in camping sites and 40% in other accommodation establishments.
The most indivisible units and permanent bedplaces in 2020 were available to tourists in mountain resorts (30% of all indivisible units and 37% of all permanent bedplaces).
