97.6% of water for the public water supply abstracted from groundwater sources
In 2020, 0.7% less water than in 2019 was abstracted for the public water supply, almost all of it (98%) from groundwater sources. Households consumed 6% more water from the public water supply than in 2019, while production and service activities consumed 10% less.
Slightly less water abstracted than in the previous year
In 2020, 169 million cubic metres of water were abstracted in Slovenia, which is 0.7% less than in the previous year; 165 million cubic metres of water were abstracted from groundwater, of which 52 million from springs. Four million cubic metres of water were abstracted from surface water, almost the same amount as in the previous year.
Compared to 2019, the amount of water provided in 2020 from the Donava river basin went up by 0.3% and from the Adriatic Sea river basin down by 6.5%.
Households consumed more water from the public water supply than in 2019; business entities consumed less
Households consumed 84.5 million cubic metres of water from the public water supply in 2020, which is 6% more than in 2019. On the other hand, business entities consumed 33.8 million cubic metres of water, which is 10% less than in 2019.
Four million cubic metres of water were supplied but uncharged (water from hydrants, water for firefighting, water for cleaning roads, etc.), which is 20% less than in 2019. 46.6 million cubic metres of water were lost, which is almost 3% less than a year before.
More connections to the water supply network
In 2020, the entire water supply network was 34,038 kilometres long, while the number of connections to the water supply network was 506,011, which is an increase of 5.2% over the previous year.
