Data Collection
SURS, a data factory
SURS obtains data from administrative sources, from individuals in households, from enterprises etc. Our SiStat Database contains over a billion data points. Every year, we issue over 700 releases, and we are also active on social media.
The Statistical Office of the Republic Slovenia (SURS) has a large amount of data, with over a billion in the SiStat Database alone. Have you ever wondered how we obtain all these data? SURS is a kind of factory. At the beginning of “production” are data sources.
200 databases
Last year, SURS acquired data from 200 databases, i.e. administrative and other data sources managed by 84 institutions. In this way, we received 279 different types of data.
60,000 cooperating enterprises
More than 70 of our surveys focus on enterprises. Last year, SURS conducted 67 surveys on its own, and another 2 together with AJPES and FURS. Over 60,000 enterprises completed questionnaires for at least one statistical survey. We sent them more than 900,000 questionnaires and 97% of enterprises responded online. The Contact Centre provided subject-matter and technical assistance to almost 11,400 different units, with which we had more than 23,200 contacts.
60,400 persons, households, and agricultural holdings
Last year, we obtained data from 60,400 persons, households, and agricultural holdings with nine surveys. We conduct surveys in the field, by telephone or online. In 2024, for example, we made almost 199,000 calls from our CATI studio.
Statistical data processing
All data, regardless of the source, must be validated, edited if necessary, and published only in aggregated form, by implementing statistical protection methods. The published data must also be equipped with methodological explanations and stored securely. Most of our data are aligned with the requirements and recommendations of the European statistical office Eurostat. At the end of the statistical data processing, we publish the data and provide them to users through various channels.
Over a billion data points
One of our main products is the SiStat Database. It contains more than a billion data points about Slovenia in the economic, demographic, and environmental fields. All of them are available free of charge, and the database is accessible on the SURS website.
741 releases
Last year, we published 741 releases on our website. Most of them presented the latest survey results from various subject-matter areas, while 11% presented several topics related to holidays and other current events and occasions.
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads
We also publish our data on social media. We are present on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads. Last year, we published more than 800 posts on these channels, on which we have 35,000 followers.
3,250 user replies
Every year, we receive many requests for data. In 2024, 3,250 requests were received, 69% in writing and 31% by phone. The largest number, a quarter, came from businesses, and the most frequently requested topics were prices and inflation.
What else is indispensable for our work?
Without cooperation with enterprises and individuals, SURS’s work would be limited or almost impossible. We would like to thank everyone who has cooperated or is still cooperating with us.
