Due to the last pre-Bologna graduates, the number of graduates increased significantly in 2016
In September 2016 students had their last opportunity to graduate from pre-Bologna higher education study programmes. Nearly 15,000 students took the advantage of this opportunity and completed their studies. They contributed to a major increase in the total number of higher education graduates in 2016. In 2015 we reported about 16,847 higher education graduates. In 2016 there were 29,135, a half of them Bologna graduates and another half pre-Bologna graduates.

The number of short cycle higher education graduates did not change compared to 2015; there were 1,832 of them in 2016.

The majority of graduates in the field of social sciences
As in the previous years, 35% of all higher education graduates completed their study in the field of Social sciences, business and law. 16% of graduates gained their diploma in the field of Engineering, manufacturing and construction and 8% in the field of Science. Social sciences are traditionally more appealing to the female population. Two out of three female graduates graduated either from a programme in the field of Social sciences, business and law, Education or Humanities and arts. Science and Technology, on the other hand, remained mainly ‘male fields’ in 2016, as less than a third of all graduates in these fields were female.

The majority (79%) of short cycle higher education graduates are distributed evenly between the fields of Social sciences, business and law, Engineering, manufacturing and construction and Health and welfare.

Who are pre-Bologna graduates completing their studies at the last moment?
The distribution of undergraduate pre-Bologna graduates in 2016 is similar to the distribution of graduates from Bologna study programmes. However, the significant majority (58%) of pre-Bologna graduates from postgraduate studies graduated in the field of Social sciences, business and law.

The major distinction between pre-Bologna and Bologna graduates is in their age. While the majority of 1st Bologna cycle graduates (58%) is younger than 25 and 75% of 2nd Bologna cycle graduates are younger than 30, most of the graduates from undergraduate pre-Bologna programmes are older than 30. With 40 years of age on average graduates from postgraduate pre-Bologna studies are older than 3rd Bologna cycle graduates (who are a little over 30 years old on average).
