Exports and imports higher than in October 2020

In the first ten months of 2021, external trade was higher than in the same period of 2020. Exports were higher by 18.9% and imports by 30.4%.

Export and import of goods in 2021 the highest in October 2021 so far

In October 2021, Slovenia’s exports and imports were higher than in October 2020, exports by 14.2% (amounting to EUR 3.6 billion) and imports by 35.7% (amounting to EUR 4.0 billion). The values of both exports and imports were the highest of all October monthly values in the past ten years.

Compared to October 2019, both values were higher, exports by 16.9% and imports by 26.0%. Even all other monthly values of exports and imports in 2021 so far, excluding the value of imports in January 2021, were higher than comparable monthly values in 2019.

Another external trade deficit was recorded in October 2021, the seventh in a row since April 2021. The export-import ratio was 89.3%, the deficit amounted to EUR 0.4 billion.

External trade increased with EU Member States and non-member countries

In October 2021, the value of goods exported to EU Member States amounted to EUR 2.5 billion and the value of goods imported from EU Member States to EUR 2.5 billion. External trade with EU Member States was approximately a fifth higher than in October 2020.

As regards trade with EU non-member countries, Slovenia exported goods worth EUR 1.1 billion and imported goods worth EUR 1.6 billion. The value of goods exported by Slovenia to EU non-member countries in October 2021 was 6.9% higher than in October 2020 and the value of goods imported from the mentioned countries was 69.0% higher. Regarding the nature of transactions, a significant share can be attributed to the operations involving processing1). In terms of Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Slovenia exported the most products from the product sector chemical and related products. On the side of exports, Slovenia traded the most with Switzerland and on the side of imports also with Switzerland as well as with China.

A deficit in the first ten months of 2021

In the first ten months of 2021, Slovenia’s exports amounted to EUR 32.6 billion and imports to EUR 33.9 billion. Both values were higher than in the same period the year before, exports by 18.9% and imports by 30.4%.

External trade deficit amounted to EUR 1.3 billion, while the export-import ratio was 96.3%.
