ICT sector generated more than EUR two billion of value added

In 2021, the ICT sector employed 33,810 employees and self-employed in 9,580 enterprises that generated EUR 5,396 million of net turnover and more than EUR 2 billion of value added.

The number of active enterprises in the ICT sector up by more than 500 

ICT sector enterprises represented 5.1% of all active enterprises engaged predominantly in market activities in 2021. 

ICT sector enterprises are engaged in the production of information-communication technologies or the provision of ICT services and they enable digital transformation of the economy and society. 

The ICT sector was comprised of 9,580 active enterprises, which is 6% more than in 2020, when their number increased by 3% in comparison to 2019. In 2021, too, the number of active enterprises in the ICT manufacturing sector continued to decrease (by 4%) and their number in the service ICT sector to increase (by 6%).
    
The majority of ICT sector enterprises was active in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (77%), which is the same as in 2020. In one year their number increased by 6% to 7,400. In activity J61 – Telecommunications their number increased by 7% and in activity J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities, web portals by 9%.
  
A tenth more employees and self-employed 

The number of employees and self-employed in the ICT sector increased by 10% to 33,810 persons. In 2020, their number increased by 5%. They represented 4.5% of all persons employed in all enterprises active in predominantly market activities.
 
More than half of employees and self-employed in the ICT sector (56%) were employed in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities, 5% more than in the previous year. 20% were employed in activity J61 – Telecommunications, 26% more than in 2020.
 
The ICT sector allocated around EUR 937 million for wages and salaries, 15% more than in 2020. 56% of those funds were allocated in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (11% more than in 2020).

EUR 850 million more net turnover than in the previous year

ICT sector enterprises generated around EUR 5,396 million of net turnover or 19% more than in 2020. This turnover represented 4.2% of the net turnover generated by all enterprises active in predominantly market activities.
 
Enterprises in the service ICT sector generated 19% or EUR 750 million more of net turnover and enterprises in the ICT manufacturing sector 20% or around EUR 100 million more.

Enterprises in the service ICT sector generated 89% of net turnover of the entire ICT sector. 37% of net turnover of the entire ICT sector was generated by enterprises in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (EUR 1,972 million or 15% more than in 2020), and 33% in activity J61 – Telecommunications (EUR 1,759 million or 29% more than in 2020). Enterprises in activity G46.5 – Wholesale of information and communication equipment increased their net turnover in 2021 by 12%.
 
For the first time more than EUR two billion of value added

ICT sector enterprises generated around EUR 2,168 million of value added, which is a quarter more than in 2020, when it increased by 10%. Enterprises of the ICT sector contributed 6.4% to value added generated by all enterprises active predominantly in market activities.
 
89% of value added of the ICT sector was generated by enterprises in the service ICT sector. 49% was generated by enterprises in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (EUR 1,052 million or 19% more than in 2020) and 30% in activity J61 – Telecommunications (EUR 644 million or 31% more than in 2020).

The valued added (apparent labour productivity) of the ICT sector per employee and self-employed was EUR 64,116, which is 13% more than in 2020, when it was EUR 56,702.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
According to the OECD definition, the ICT sector comprises enterprises that are engaged in the production or provision of services of information-communication technologies and are registered in the following NACE Rev. 2 activities: ICT manufacturing sector (C26.1 – Manufacture of electronic components and boards, C26.2 – Manufacture of computers and peripheral equipment, C26.3 – Manufacture of communication equipment, C26.4 – Manufacture of consumer electronics, C26.8 – Manufacture of magnetic and optical media), service ICT sector (G46.5 – Wholesale of information and communication equipment, J58.2 – Software publishing, J61 – Telecommunications, J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities, J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities; web portals, S95.1 – Repair of computers and communication equipment).

The source for the ICT sector data is structural business statistics, where form 2021 onwards the entire section K – Financial and insurance services is observed, as well as sections P – Education, Q – Human health and social work activities, R – Art, entertainment and recreation activities and division S96 – Other personal service activities is observed since 2021. Therefore, from 2021 on data referring to all enterprises that were active predominantly in market activities are no longer comparable with data from previous years.
