Enterprises generated 39% more turnover with web sales to private consumers

In 2021, 22% of enterprises with 10 or more employees and self-employed generated around EUR 4,480 million of turnover (excluding VAT) with web sales, 42% more than a year earlier. Turnover with web sales was generated by 19% of enterprises in Vzhodna and 25% in Zahodna Slovenia.

Four out of five enterprises have a website

Three quarters of individuals aged 16–74 searched for information about goods or services over the Internet in the first quarter of 2022, while 63% made at least one online purchase in the period of 12 months (April 2021 – March 2022). See more in Online Purchases, 2022.

Among enterprises with 10 or more employees and self-employed 81% are present on the Internet with a website: 78% of small, 93% of medium-sized and all large enterprises.

80% present on the website description of goods or services they offer, catalogues or price information. A fifth provide the possibility of online ordering or reservation or booking, e.g. shopping cart. This is provided on the website by 18% of small, 24% of medium-sized and 38% of large enterprises. Enterprises can generate turnover with the sale of products or services, receipt of orders or reservations via their own website or a website of the parent enterprise, via extranet and e-commerce marketplaces, i.e. websites used by several enterprises for trading products or services, e.g. platform for online reservations.

More than a third of enterprises in the service sector generated turnover with web sales

In 2021, 22% of enterprises with 10 or more employees and self-employed generated turnover with web sales, receiving orders for products or services, reservations via websites. This way the turnover was generated by 21% of small, 25% of medium-sized and 38% of large enterprises.

From the point of view of enterprise activities, turnover was generated via web sales by a tenth of enterprises in manufacturing activities and 34% of enterprises in service activities. Turnover via web sales was generated by 19% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenia and 25% in Zahodna Slovenia.

16% of enterprises generated turnover with web sales via their own website or a website of the parent enterprise, via extranet (14% of small, 20% of medium-sized and 36% of large enterprises) and 11% via e-marketplaces – websites.

The value of web sales to private consumers higher by about EUR 390 million

Enterprises generated 4.8% of their turnover (excluding VAT) with web sales in 2021 (2020: 4.1%). Small and medium-sized enterprises generated 6.1% and large enterprises 3.1% of their turnover (excluding VAT) with web sales. Enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenia generated with web sales 4.5% of their turnover and in Zahodna Slovenia 5.0%.

The value of the turnover generated with web sales amounted to around EUR 4,480 million (excluding VAT) or 42% more than a year earlier. 33% of this turnover was generated by small, 39% by medium-sized and 28% by large enterprises. 92% of the turnover generated with web sales (excluding VAT) was generated with web sales via own website or a website of the parent enterprise, via extranet and 8% via e-marketplaces.

69% of the turnover generated with web sales (excluding VAT) was generated by enterprises with web sales to other enterprises or public authorities and 31% to private consumers. The value of turnover generated with web sales to private consumers amounted to around EUR 1,390 million, 39% or around EUR 390 million (excluding VAT) more than a year earlier.

53% of this turnover was generated by enterprises with web sales in Slovenia, 40% to other EU Member States and 7% to the rest of the world.

Enterprises in the activity trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles generated with web sales more than EUR 2 billion of turnover

In activity trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (G 45–47 of NACE Rev. 2) 91% of enterprises are present on the Internet with a website, while 47% provide the possibility of online ordering or reservation or booking, e.g. shopping cart. In 2021, 41% of enterprises in this activity generated turnover with web sales. They generated with web sales 7.8% of their turnover (excluding VAT), around EUR 2,300 million or EUR 450 million more than a year earlier. 35% of the turnover was generated with web sales to private consumers.

In retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (G 47 of NACE Rev. 2) 52% of enterprises provide the possibility of online ordering, reservation or booking on the website. In 2021, 45% of enterprises generated turnover with web sales which amounted to 5.4% of their turnover (excluding VAT), which presents around EUR 744 million. 98% of this turnover was generated via their own website or a website of the parent enterprise, via extranet and 89% with web sales to final cunsumers.

Almost a third of enterprises in food and beverage service activities generated turnover with web sales via e-marketplaces – applications for food delivery

In 2021, 11% of enterprises with 10 or more employees and self-employed generated turnover with web sales via e-marketplace: 11% of small, a tenth of medium-sized and 11% of large enterprises. This way enterprises generated around EUR 370 million (excluding VAT) of turnover or 0.4% of their turnover (excluding VAT).

Turnover via e-marketplaces was generated by:

  • 77% of enterprises in accommodation activities (I 55 of NACE Rev. 2), which generated this way 10.1% of their turnover (excluding VAT);
  • 45% of enterprises in transportation and storage activities (H 49–53 of NACE Rev. 2), which generated this way around EUR 216 million (excluding VAT) or 3.8% of their turnover (excluding VAT);
  • 31% of enterprises in food and beverage service activities (I 56 of NACE Rev. 2), which generated this way 3.2% of their total turnover (excluding VAT).

The published data are estimates derived from the survey on the sample that represents enterprises with 10 or more employees and self-employed persons. An enterprise may consist of several ownership-related legal entities, as long as they operate on the market as one independent enterprise.
