1.89% more enterprise groups than a year earlier
Enterprises integrated into multinational enterprise groups generated just over a half (53%) of total turnover in Slovenia, and employed more than a quarter (28%) of all persons employed in Slovenia.
Slovenia was the country of control of roughly half of enterprise groups
In 2021, economic activity in Slovenia was co-created by 5,876 enterprise groups, of which more than a third were all-resident. Combined with domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups, Slovenia was the country of control of roughly half of enterprise groups. Similarly to the previous year, half of the remaining enterprise groups were foreign controlled enterprise groups, of which nearly half (41%) were controlled by four EU Member States (Austria, Croatia, Germany and Italy).
The prevailing countries of control from the rest of the world are the United Kingdom and United States, which control together almost the same number of enterprise groups as Austria, which is the leading country of control of foreign controlled enterprise groups.

In the past years, no significant changes have been recorded regarding the prevailing section of economic activities in different types of enterprise groups. The share of all-resident enterprise groups was the highest in professional, scientific and technical activities (20%), while the shares of domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups and of foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups were the highest in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (23% and 31%, respectively).
Enterprise groups with five or fewer units in the group prevail in all-resident groups and in foreign controlled enterprise groups
About 87% of enterprises integrated into all-resident enterprise groups belong to the size class of five or fewer units in the group, while the share is even higher with foreign controlled enterprise groups (90%). As regards domestically controlled enterprise groups, the situation is more balanced, as 53% of enterprises belong to the size class of five or fewer units in the group, while the remaining belong to the size class of six or more units in the group.
Enterprises integrated into all-resident enterprise groups belonging to the size class of five or fewer units in the group generated 85% of total turnover of the same type of enterprise groups, while the share with foreign controlled enterprise groups is somewhat smaller at 72%. As regards domestically controlled enterprise groups, the opposite is true as the share of the size class of five or fewer units in the group is 17%.
The situation with employment is similar to generated turnover. Enterprises integrated into all-resident groups with the size class of five or fewer units in the group employed 81% of all persons employed in this type of enterprise groups, while the share in foreign controlled enterprise groups is somewhat smaller at 71%. Similarly to generated turnover, domestically controlled enterprise groups with the size class of five or fewer units in the group employed only a quarter of persons employed in this type of groups.
Fewer than 1% of enterprises integrated into domestically controlled enterprise groups generated a fifth of total turnover in Slovenia
