In nominal terms average earnings lower at the monthly and higher at the annual level

Average gross earnings for December amounted to EUR 2,159.40 and were lower than earnings for November in nominal terms by 3.8% and in real terms by 4.0%. Average monthly gross earnings for 2022 amounted to EUR 2,023.92 and were higher in nominal terms and lower in real terms than earnings for 2021.

At the monthly level, average earnings decreased more in the private sector

Average gross earnings for December 2022 amounted to EUR 2,159.40. Compared to earnings for November, they were lower in nominal terms by 3.8% and in real terms by 4.0%. Average net earnings amounted to EUR 1,419.56. Compared to earnings for November, they were lower in nominal terms by 4.1% and in real terms by 4.3%.

In the private sector average gross earnings decreased by 5.6% (mainly due to fewer extra payments, i.e. 13th month payments and Christmas bonuses) and in the public sector by 0.3%. In the institutional sector general government, which is a part of the public sector, they went up by 3.8%.

Average (monthly) earnings for 2022 up in nominal terms and down in real terms

Average earnings for 2022 amounted to EUR 2,023.92 gross and EUR 1,318.64 net. Compared to earnings for 2021, they were higher in nominal terms (gross earnings by 2.8% and net earnings by 3.8%) and lower in real terms (gross earnings by 5.5% and net earnings by 4.6%).

Compared to earnings for 2021, average gross earnings for 2022 increased in the private sector by 6.2% and decreased in the public sector by 2.5% (in the institutional sector general government they went down by 4.9%). Fluctuation in earnings was among others also affected by measures related to the COVID-19 epidemic in the first half of 2021.

Year-on-year nominal growth of average (monthly) earnings for 2022 slower than in the previous years

An overview of data for the 2018–2022 period shows that the nominal growth rates of average gross earnings (compared to the previous year) were increasing in the entire period, but in 2022 the growth was slower than in the previous years. Real growth rate of average gross earnings was the highest in 2020 and the lowest in 2022, when it was negative (because of a higher average annual inflation rate).
