Lower production of butter and drinking milk
Around 48,300 tonnes of cows’ milk was collected from agricultural holdings in January 2023, 4.4% more than in December 2022 and 1.8% less than in January 2022. Dairies produced less butter, drinking milk and cream, and more acidified milk and milk powder.
Less butter, drinking milk and cream
Dairies decreased the production of drinking milk by almost one fifth (or by 2,900 tonnes) compared to December 2022. In comparison with January 2022, they produced 14% less milk. Butter production decreased even more: by more than half compared to the previous month and by more than 23% compared to January 2022. The third group of milk products with lower production was cream: dairies produced more than 9% less cream than a month ago and almost 2% less than a year ago.
Increased production of acidified milk and milk powder
Dairies produced more than 6% more acidified milk products than in the previous month, while compared to January 2022 production went up by more than 5%. The production of milk powder increased in comparison with December by more than 76% and in comparison with January 2022 by more than 73%.
More cheese than in December and less than in January last year
Cheese production was more than 2% higher than in the previous month, but also more than 4% lower than in January 2022.
The same amount of cows’ milk collected in the EU
Dairies in the EU collected around 144.5 million tonnes of cows’ milk in 2022, which is practically the same amount as the year before.
Minor changes in the production of dairy products in the EU
The production of dairy products in the EU decreased slightly more only in whole milk powder (by 5.5%) and in condensed milk (by 4%). The production of the other groups changed by less than 1%: dairies in the EU produced 0.6% less acidified milk products and 0.5% less cheese. On the other hand, slight increases were recorded in the production of skimmed milk powder (by 0.7%), cream (by 0.3%) and butter (by 0.2%).
After a long period of growth, the price of raw milk decreased in December
The price of raw milk in the EU decreased by 0.6% in December 2022 after 22 months of growth and amounted to EUR 0.574/kg. Also in January 2023, we expect a further decrease in the raw milk price.
