The area of organic agricultural land in use is less than the year before
Organic utilised agricultural area in 2022 was 42,181 hectares, 6% less than the year before. There were 3,430 organic farms, 72 more than the year before, and 356 agricultural holdings in conversion, 10 fewer than the year before.
The number of organic farms up, the number of farms in conversion down
In 2022, the system of control of organic production comprised of 3,786 agricultural holdings (i.e. those with a certificate or in the process of conversion), or 2% more than in the previous year. The number of agricultural holdings with the status of organic producers increased by 72 or by 2% to 3,430. There were 356 agricultural holdings in conversion, which is 10 or 3% fewer than in the previous year.
At the last census in 2020, there were 68,331 agricultural holdings in Slovenia. If we assume that this figure has not changed drastically in the next two years, all farms in the system of control of organic production in 2022 comprised just under 6%, and those with certification slightly more than 5% of all agricultural holdings in the country.
Organic utilised agricultural area slightly smaller than the previous year, land in conversion larger
Organic utilised agricultural areas decreased by about 6% or 2,580 hectares in 2022, while the area of agricultural land under conversion increased by 56% or 3,955 hectares. The area of certified land was 42,181 hectares, which is 46% or 13,374 hectares more than in 2012 (28,807 hectares). The area of agricultural land under conversion was 11,021 hectares.
Slightly less permanent grassland, the largest increase in cultivated land of shell fruit trees and apple trees
With 80% (33,550 hectares), by far the largest share of organic utilised agricultural area was still that of permanent grassland. Compared to the previous year, the area decreased by about 7% (2,517 hectares). The area of arable land followed with 7% (2,870 hectares), the area of which increased by about 2% (57 hectares) compared to the previous year. In 2022, the areas of shell fruit trees and apple trees increased the most. In the case of shell fruit, the area went up by 98 hectares or by 32% - the largest share of which, with 61 and 32 hectares, respectively, belonged to walnut and hazelnut plantations. The area of apple trees went up by 145 hectares or 46%.
A good harvest for organically grown cereals …
The output of organically grown cereals amounted to 6,041 tonnes and was 3% (176 tonnes) larger than the year before, while the cultivated area was 1% smaller. 2,291 tonnes of organic wheat and spelt were produced, 12% (245 tonnes) more than the year before, and it was grown on a 6% smaller area. There was 1,008 tonnes of organically grown barley, which is a 24% (196 tonnes) increase in the amount of the crop, which was grown on an 18% larger area. Oats had a worse yield than the year before. Total output amounted to 514 tonnes, which is 17% (109 tonnes) less than the year before, which was grown on an area that was 9% smaller.
… as well as for vegetables, fruit, grapes and olives
The harvest of vegetables, melons and strawberries weighed 1,989 tonnes, or 1% more than the year before, and it was grown on an area that was 1% smaller. There were 4,341 tonnes of organically grown fruit, which is 3,014 tonnes or 227% more than the year before (1,327 tonnes). Despite the seemingly excellent harvest, it still represents only 58% of the 2020 harvest, when 7,431 tonnes of fruit were produced. Grapes and olives also had a better harvest than the year before. 2,141 tonnes of grapes were grown, or 5% more than the year before, for which a 5% larger cultivation area was used. The olive crop weighed 627 tonnes and almost doubled compared to 2021, when it weighed 315 tonnes. Compared to the year before, the 2022 yield was bigger by 99%, and was grown on a 14% larger area. We produced 1,488 tonnes of organic potatoes, which is 11% more than the year before (1,336 tonnes), and it was grown on a 7% larger area.
A sharp drop in the number of poultry and rabbits, but there were more pigs, cattle and beehives
In 2022, 3,185 pigs (3% more), 39,583 cattle (2% more), 34,188 sheep (1% more) and 6,578 goats (3% fewer than the year before) were organically reared. There was an almost one fifth decline in the number of poultry as well as in the number of rabbits (19%). There was an increase in the number of wild game in farming and the number of beehives, both by 3%.
Almost a fifth more meat from organic farming
The total amount of meat from organic farming was 19% higher. With over 3 tonnes, sheep meat recorded the biggest increase (by 118%). Pork and beef followed with a 70% and a 18% growth, respectively. However, the amount of equine meat decreased by a third (33%), and of poultry meat by a quarter (24%).
More milk and honey, fewer eggs
In 2022, farmers milked 9,456 tonnes of organic cow’s milk, or a fifth (21%) more than the year before. In addition, 152 tonnes of sheep’s milk, or 12% less, and 209 tonnes of goat’s milk, or 5% less, were produced. In 2022, 55.7 tonnes of organic honey were produced, which is 73% more than the year before. There were fewer organically produced eggs. Their output decreased by one tenth (10%).
