The largest number of marriages in September, slightly more divorces than a year ago
Last year, 6,388 couples were married and 2,165 were divorced. The number of marriages was 6% lower and the number of divorces slightly higher (by 1%) than in the previous year.
Fewer marriages than in the previous year
In 2023, 6,388 couples were married or 380 (6%) fewer than a year ago. Among marriages there were 77 same-sex marriages: 47 between two men and 30 between two women.
The marriage rate was 3.0 per 1,000 population. It was the highest in the Podravska statistical region (3.4) and the lowest in the Goriška statistical region (2.3).
Most couples get married on a Saturday. In 2023, 3,780 (59%) couples were married on a Saturday. 24 June and 9 September were days with most marriages (176 each). The month with the largest number of marriages was September (995), followed by June (980) and May (811). The fewest couples were married in January (191). 18 couples on average were married per day.
On average grooms three years older than brides
The mean age of a groom at marriage was 37.7 years. On average grooms were three years older than brides (34.9 years).
5,617 (88%) grooms and 5,686 (89%) brides were married for the first time. For 5,244 (82%) couples this was the first marriage for both spouses.
The mean age of a groom at first marriage was 32.9 years. A bride was on average two years younger (30.9 years).
Most marriages take place between Slovenian citizens. In 5,053 marriages (79%) both the groom and the bride had Slovenian citizenship. 530 grooms (8%) with Slovenian citizenship married brides with foreign citizenship. Among those, the largest number of brides was from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 508 brides (8%) with Slovenian citizenship married grooms with foreign citizenship. The largest number of grooms was also from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 297 marriages (5%) were between two residents with foreign citizenship.
Slightly more divorces than a year earlier
2,165 couples were divorced, 16 (1%) more than a year before. Six couples on average were divorced per day. One couple per 1,000 population divorced in Slovenia in 2023.
The mean age of husband at divorce was 48.0 years and of wife 45.1 years. Average duration of marriage at divorce was 14.6 years. 37 marriages ended in divorce in the first year of marriage.
1,035 (48%) divorces were without dependent children. The remaining 1,130 (52%) marriages that ended in divorce involved 1,840 dependent children. Most of the children were assigned to the mother (54%); 3% were assigned to the father, and 42% to both parents.
