The number of first and family names increased again. At the beginning of 2024, there were over 62,000 different first and almost 139,000 family names among Slovenia’s population. The list of the most common names did not change: Marija and Franc are still top first names, and Novak top family name.

Diversity of first and family names up

At the beginning of 2024, 62,257 different names (1,217 more than a year before) and 138,718 different family names were registered in Slovenia. The list of family names keeps getting longer every year; in the last year, it increased by 3,415.

If all different names were distributed evenly among the residents of Slovenia, every name would appear 34-times. The fact is that 70% of all names are unique – they appear only once. On the other hand, 25 names (17 male and 8 female) had the frequency 10,000 or more.

The longest name that appeared at least five times in the Slovenian population consists of 13 letters; this is the female name Maksimilijana and there were 13 Maksimilijanas living in Slovenia on 1 January 2024. The longest male names that appeared at least five times consist of 12 letters: Maksimilijan, Massimiliano and Konstantinos.

Still Marija and Franc

The most common female names are still Marija (44,645) and Ana (22,566), although the number of women with these two names decreased in one year by 1,653 and 456, respectively. Among all women in Slovenia, on average one in 24 was named Marija and one in 47 Ana. The most common male name is still Franc (19,014); on average, one in 56 men in Slovenia is named Franc. In one year the name decreased by 779.

How do the names of the youngest differ from the names of the oldest?

The fashion factor is one of the most decisive when it comes to naming children and shows how the taste of time changes. In the past, there used to be certain restrictions on how children were named. This was largely related to the church calendar - the list of patrons significantly influenced the naming of children. This resulted in the list of different names among the older residents of Slovenia being shorter today than among the younger ones. A name that was decades ago still common may now be highly uncommon.

Girls under the age of 5 and women aged 85+ have in total 5,857 different names: 3,416 appear only among the young, 1,986 only among the older, and 455 in both generations.

The most "old-fashioned" names that no longer appear among girls under the age of 5 are Frančiška, Jožefa, Ljudmila, and Štefanija. Modern names are generally shorter. Among the oldest population there are no women named Zala, Mia, Hana, Ajda, Lana, etc. More than a third of modern names are combined names. Combined names that appear among the elderly are even more frequent, almost two-thirds. In the past, it was necessary to distinguish between many Marijas and Anas, which was possible by assigning yet another name.

What about names that have not gone out of fashion and have been given to newborn girls both in the past and today? There are 455 such names. Fifteen of them appear more than 50 times among both girls and older women. There are more women named Marija, Ana, Ivana, Vida, Kristina, etc., among older women. Among younger girls, two names are more popular: Ema and Neža. However, no other name stands out like the name Marija: per 1,000 women aged 85+ there are on average 183 Marijas, while among girls under 5 the name is assigned rarely (1 per 1,000). A name that was represented in the past, but is more numerous today is the name Ema: there are 24 girls named Ema per 1,000 girls, and only 3 per 1,000 among the older generation. From 2014 on, Ema has been among the top three most popular names for newborn girls.

Boys under the age of 5 and men aged 85+ have in total 5,029 different names: 3,508 appear only among the young, 1,134 only among the older, and 387 in both generations. The most »old fashioned« names for men are Alojzij, Marijan, Branko, and Vincenc, while modern names are Nik, Mark, Tim, and Liam.

Among 387 names that appear in both generations, 12 names appear more than 50 times among both boys and older men. There are more men named Ivan, Peter, and Martin among the older generations, while among the young there are more boys named Jakob and Matija. 21 boys per 1,000 boys are named Jakob compared to 5 men per 1,000 men aged 85+. Franc and Luka are almost among these names but do not meet the condition of at least 50 residents in each of the two age groups.
