Crop production, 2024

A favourable year for almost all cereals, a very poor one for vineyards

2024 was a favourable year for the production of almost all types of stubble cereals, maize, oil crops and plants for green fodder. Good harvests were recorded for almost all types of late fruits and slightly poorer for early fruits. The worst output was detected in vineyards.

Average yield of wheat slightly larger than the 10-year average

Area sown with wheat decreased by 2% compared to the previous year, but it yielded better. Average yield of 5.5 tonnes per hectare was higher by 8% compared to 2023 and by 4% compared to the 10-year average. In total, around 152,400 tonnes of wheat was harvested from almost 28,000 hectares.

Barley yielded slightly worse. In 2024, it was sown on around 21,000 hectares and total output was around 100,700 tonnes. The average yield was 4.8 tonnes per hectare, which is 4% more than the previous year, yet still 2% less compared to the last 10-year average.

Good yield of maize for grain and average of green maize

Around 72,700 hectares of arable land was sown with maize, which is 2% less than in the previous year. Almost 60% of that area was intended for grain production. Maize for grain yielded well, the average yield of 9.2 tonnes per hectare was by 5% larger than in the previous year and by 3% larger compared to the last 10-year average.

Green maze was produced on a 3% larger area than in 2023, and it also yielded better (by 10%). The average yield of 43.7 tonnes per hectare was comparable to the 10-year average.

A good harvest of almost all oil crops

All oil crops yielded better than in the previous year. Total output of oil rape increased by 13%, despite being grown on 10% smaller area. Average yield of 3.2 tonnes per hectare was bigger by 23% compared to 2023 and by 17% compared to the 10-year average.

The largest area since the start of measurements was devoted to soya cultivation – 4,166 hectares. Average yield of 2.8 tonnes per hectare was comparable to the 10-year average and by 8% better than in the previous year.

Area sown with oil pumpkins increased by 27% compared to 2023. They also yielded very well. Average yield of dry pumpkin seed was 0.7 tonnes per hectare, which is 13% better than the last 10-year average. In total, 2,530 tonnes of pumpkin seeds was harvested on 3,760 hectares.

Sunflowers yielded 5% better than in 2023, although the average yield of 2.1 tonnes per hectare was still 9% lower than the 10-year average.

Yields of plants for green fodder from fields and hay from permanent grassland were good

Grasses, grass mixtures, clover-grass mixtures and grass-clover mixtures were sown on 30,133 hectares, or by 13% less than in 2023. Average yield of 6.4 tonnes per hectare was comparable to the 10-year average and by 8% higher than last year's.

Clover and lucerne were sown on a smaller area than in 2023 (by 7%). Average yield of 6.1 tonnes per hectare was comparable to the 2023 yield, but 5% smaller than the 10-year average. Around 21,600 tonnes of lucerne and 20,400 tonnes of clover were produced last year.

The total yield of hay grown on permanent grassland was 5% higher than in 2023. Total output from around 274,000 hectares of permanent grassland weighed around 1,646,000 tonnes of dry hay, or 6 tonnes per hectare.

Good output of apples and pears in orchard plantations, early fruit species and walnuts did worse

After a very poor 2023 season, a much better one was recorded in 2024 by almost all late fruit species. Smaller yields compared to the 10-year average were detected only by some early fruit species and walnuts.

Apples yielded 26.6 tonnes per hectare, 74% more than in the previous year and 16% more compared to the 10-year average. The total output of apples in orchard plantations weighed more than 50,600 tonnes. Pears also did great. With 17.4 tonnes per hectare, average yield was 55% larger than in 2023 and 24% larger than the 10-year average. The total output of peaches and nectarines from 211 hectares weighed 2,390 tonnes, or on average 11.3 tonnes per hectare, comparable to the 10-year average.

Lower yields were detected for almost all early fruit species and walnuts. The average yield of apricots weighed 3.2 tonnes per hectare, which is more than half less than the 10-year average and of cherries 3.5 tonnes per hectare, more than a third less. Walnuts did slightly better than in the disastrous 2023 season, but still by 21% worse compared to the 10-year average. Average yield of walnuts in 2024 weighed 1.4 tonnes per hectare.

Olive oil producers had an excellent season in olive groves. Average yield was 2.3 tonnes per hectare and total output around 3,800 tonnes. Average yield was almost triple the 2023 yield (0.8 tonnes per hectare) and by 57% larger than the 10-year average.

A similar season was detected in extensive orchards, where all fruit species did better than in 2023. Output of apples, pears and plums was above average compared to the 10-year average. Apricots, peaches and nectarines, and walnuts did slightly worse. Total output of fruits from extensive orchards weighed around 26,000 tonnes.

Poor grape output

The worst season since the beginning of monitoring was detected in vineyards. Vines yielded 4.8 tonnes of grapes per hectare, which is 13% less than in 2023 and a quarter less compared to the 10-year average. Less than 47,000 tonnes of white grapes was collected or 15% less than the year before. Total output of red grapes was 11% lighter than in 2023, weighing around 21,000 tonnes. Average yield of 4.9 tonnes per hectare was also below average compared to the 10-year average.

Slightly larger area intended for vegetables production

Vegetables were grown on almost 4,700 hectares, which is by 9% larger area than the year before. Total output weighed 85,400 tonnes, of which 56,000 tonnes was for the market. In terms of quantity, the most white cabbage production was the largest (almost 14,000 tonnes), followed by onions (almost 10,500 tonnes) and tomatoes (almost 9,900 tonnes). Also around 8,900 tonnes of lettuce (early, summer and autumn) was produced. Average yields of almost all vegetable species were slightly better than in the previous year.
