Consumer price indices, March 2025

Annual growth of consumer prices at 2.0%, monthly at 0.6%

In March, consumer prices increased on average by 2.0% annually and by 0.6% monthly. Service prices went up in a year by 3.4% and goods prices by 1.3%.

The annual price increase affected the most by higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages …

In March, consumer prices increased by 2.0% at the annual level. In the same month last year inflation stood at 3.6%.

In one year, service prices increased on average by 3.4% and goods prices by 1.3%. Semi-durable goods prices went up by 2.2% and non-durable goods prices by 1.7%, while durable goods were 0.8% cheaper.

The annual growth rate was pushed up the most (by 0.7 of a percentage point) by 3.5% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition, 0.3 p.p. each was contributed by higher prices in the groups health (by 5.4%) and restaurants and hotels (by 4.2%).

At the annual level, prices on average also increased in the groups clothing and footwear (by 2.5%), recreation and culture (by 2.3%), miscellaneous goods and services (also by 2.3%) and transport (by 1.0%). Each of the mentioned groups added 0.2 p.p. to the annual inflation.

On the other hand, prices in the group housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels decreased by 1.2%, which eased the inflation by 0.2 p.p.

… and the monthly by higher prices of clothing and footwear, and electricity

In March, consumer prices were on average 0.6% higher than a month before.

The monthly inflation was mostly the result of higher prices of clothing and footwear. Due to the end of discounts and the arrival of the new spring-summer collection, clothing prices went up by 9.4%, which contributed 0.4 p.p. to the inflation rate. Footwear was 5.9% more expensive than in the previous month and added 0.1 p.p. 

In March, prices in the group electricity, gas and other fuels increased on average by 7.5% (electricity prices went up the most, by 16.5%), which contributed 0.4 p.p.

Additional 0.1 p.p. each was added by higher prices of out-patient services (by 4.9%), other recreational items and equipment, gardens and pets (by 2.9%), food (by 0.7%) and all other price increases in March.

On the other hand, the monthly inflation was eased by 0.6 p.p. by lower prices of package holidays, which were at the end of the winter season 14.8% cheaper. Monthly inflation was also pushed down by 0.1 p.p. by lower prices of operation of personal transport equipment (petrol and diesel prices fell the most, by 1.4%).

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this March the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.2% (a year ago 3.4%). The monthly price growth stood at 0.8%.

In one year, service prices went up on average by 4.1% and goods prices by 1.1%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 1.6% and semi-durable goods prices by 1.4%, while durable goods prices went down by 1.4%.

Annual inflation rates in February 2025 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in February the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.3% (a month before 2.5%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.7% (a month before 2.8%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in France (0.9%) and the highest in Hungary (5.7%); in Slovenia it stood at 1.9%.
