The deficit of the general government sector in 2024 amounted to EUR 597 million or 0.9% of GDP, while gross debt amounted to EUR 44,895 million or 67.0% of GDP.

In 2024, the central government subsector and the local government subsector generated a deficit (EUR 454 million and EUR 255 million, respectively) while social security funds generated a surplus (EUR 113 million). In nominal terms, total deficit was EUR 1,045 million lower than in 2023.

At the end of 2024, gross debt of the general government sector amounted to EUR 44,895 million or 67.0% of GDP. Compared to the end of 2023, it increased in nominal terms by EUR 1,156 million; relative to GDP it decreased by 1.4 percentage points.

Statistics for 2023 are revised in this release due to the recording of refunds of subsidies relating to the energy crisis, and to changes in the time of recording of individual investment expenditure. Total effect of both changes on net lending / net borrowing is negligible.
