ICT sector with more turnover, value added, persons employed in 2018 over 2017
In 2018 the ICT sector generated by 3.9% higher turnover and by 4.7% higher value added. There were 27,680 persons employed, 5% more than in the previous year. 76% of all enterprises in the ICT sector were active in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (activity J62).
The ICT sector provides infrastructure necessary for the digital transformation of the economy (business processes, development of software solutions and new business models) and of the society. The sector is comprised of enterprises engaged in the production of information-communication technologies (the ICT manufacturing sector) or the provision of ICT services (the service ICT sector).
The growth of the ICT sector turnover lower than in the previous year
In 2018 the ICT sector generated around EUR 4,139 million of turnover or 3.9% more than in 2017. The generated turnover represented 4.0% of the turnover generated by all enterprises active in predominantly market activities. The growth of the ICT sector turnover was lower than in 2017, when ICT sector enterprises generated 6.4% more turnover in comparison with 2016.
68% of the ICT sector turnover was generated by enterprises in the activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (35% or EUR 1,441 million) and in the activity J61 – Telecommunications (33% or EUR 1,357 million).
Enterprises in the activity J61 – Telecommunications generated in comparison with 2017 2.7% less turnover and in the activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities 8.3% more turnover.
Employment in the ICT sector continues to grow
In 2018 the ICT sector employed 27,680 persons employed, which is 5% more than in the previous year. They represented 4.2% of all persons employed in all enterprises active in predominantly market activities. The number of persons employed increased in the ICT manufacturing sector (by 10%) as well as in the service ICT sector (by 5%).
In 2018, ICT sector enterprises allocated around EUR 665 million for wages and salaries, which is 9.3% more than in the previous year. The funds allocated to wages and salaries represented 5.5% of the funds allocated for wages and salaries by all enterprises active in predominantly market activities in 2018.
Almost half of value added generated in the ICT sector generated by enterprises involved in the programming, planning and design of computer systems
In 2018 the ICT sector generated EUR 1,438 million of value added, which is 4.7% or around EUR 64 million more than in 2017. The value added generated by ICT sector enterprises in 2018 represented 6.0% of the value added generated by all enterprises active predominantly in market activities, which is almost the same as in 2017. In comparison with 2017, when ICT sector enterprises generated around EUR 114 million more valued added than in 2016, the growth of value added in 2018 in comparison with 2017 was almost halved.
Almost half of the valued added of the ICT sector was generated by enterprises in the activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (47%), where the value added increased by 9% in comparison with the previous year and was around EUR 677 million. The generated value added in the activity G46.5 – Wholesale of information and communication equipment increased by more than a quarter (26%). On the other hand, the generated value added in the activity J61 – Telecommunications, where enterprises generated around EUR 438 million of value added, decreased by 7%.
The valued added (apparent labour productivity) of the ICT sector per person employed was in 2018 EUR 51,940 (in 2017: EUR 52,216).
Enterprises in the activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities presented more than three quarters of all enterprises in the ICT sector
In 2018 the ICT sector was comprised of 8,524 enterprises, 5% more than in the previous year. These ICT sector enterprises represented 5.8% of all enterprises active predominantly in market activities. 97% of the ICT sector enterprises were active in the service ICT sector and 3% in the ICT manufacturing sector, which is the same as in the previous year.
The number of enterprises increased the most in the activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (by 6%), where 76% of all enterprises that comprise the ICT sector were active. In the activity J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities, web portals, where 10% of all enterprises in the ICT sector were active, the number increased by 5%. The number of enterprises in the activity J61 – Telecommunications decreased by 4%.
