In September 2020, 8.6% more deaths than in September 2019
According to provisional data for September 2020, 1,654 children were born and 1,662 people died. The number of births was lower and the number of deaths was higher than in the same month in 2019.
According to provisional data, in September 2020 1,654 children were born, 1.8% fewer than in September 2019, and 1,662 people died, 8.6% more than in September 2019.
According to provisional data, in the first nine months of 2020 13,938 children were born, 4.7% fewer than in the same period of 2019, and 15,499 people died, 0.2% more than in the same period of 2019.
Excess mortality
Excess mortality (i.e. excess number of deaths compared to the average number of deaths in the same periods in the past) in the first nine months of 2020 was 2.3%. This means that in this period, 2.3% more people died compared to the 2015-2019 average.
Compared to 2015–2019, the number of deaths in 2020 deviated the most significantly in September: 10.8% more people died than on average in September between 2015 and 2019.
Data publication
In response to the increased needs of users for up-to-date data, the Statistical Office started to publish monthly data on deaths and live births by days. In the SiStat Database, the already existing tables on live births and deaths by days are being updated monthly.
Eurostat continuously publishes provisional data on the number of deaths by weeks by countries. Slovenia provides provisional data monthly.
The National Institute of Public Health is publishing daily changes in the number of deaths with COVID-19 (in Slovene only).
