In the first nine months of 2021, the values of exports and imports higher than in the same period of 2020

In the period from January to September 2021, Slovenia’s exports went up by 19.1% and imports by 29.4% over the same period of 2020.

In September 2021, Slovenia's exports and imports of goods were higher than in September 2020

Slovenia’s exports in September 2021 were 16.7% higher than in September 2020 (amounting to EUR 3.5 billion), while in the same comparison imports were 46.7% higher (amounting to EUR 3.9 billion). The largest share of total exports and imports (about four fifths) can be attributed to transactions involving actual or intended transfer of ownership from residents to non-residents for financial or other compensations. On the side of exports, the remaining share can mostly be attributed to operations following processing1 under contract (no transfer of ownership to the processor) and on the side of imports, to operations with a view to processing under contract (no transfer of ownership to the processor).

In September 2021, exports and imports of goods were higher than in September 2019, when the adverse effects of the COVID-19 epidemic had not yet been observed in the figures of Slovenia’s external trade. As mentioned, exports and imports of goods were higher in September 2021 than in September 2019; exports by 16.5% and imports by 30.8%.

The export-import ratio was 87.9% in September 2021 and the external trade deficit amounted to EUR 0.5 billion.

Exports and imports of goods to EU Member States as well as to other countries higher than in September 2020

In September 2021, Slovenia maintained a similar share of total trade with EU Member States as the month before, as approximately two thirds of total exports and a little less than two thirds of total imports were generated with countries from the mentioned group. The value of goods exported to EU Member States amounted to EUR 2.3 billion (up by 14.6% over September 2020) and the value of goods imported from EU Member States to EUR 2.4 billion (up by 20.7% over September 2020).

In terms of the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Slovenia exported to EU Member States most products from the product group motor cars, medicaments, aluminium and petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (other than crude). On the other hand, it imported most products from the product group oils and oils from bituminous minerals (other than crude), motor cars, electric current and medicaments. Slovenia traded the most with Germany, Italy, Austria and Croatia, on the side of exports also with France and on the side of imports with Hungary.

As regards trade with EU non-member countries, Slovenia exported goods worth EUR 1.2 billion and imported goods worth EUR 1.5 billion. The value of goods exported by Slovenia to EU non-member countries in September 2021 was 21.0% higher than in September 2020 and the value of goods imported from the mentioned countries was 119.9% higher than in September 2020. Regarding the nature of transaction on the side of imports, a significant share can be attributed to the operations involving processing.

As regards EU non-member countries, Slovenia exported the most products from the groups (SITC) medicaments and medicinal and pharmaceutical products (other than medicaments), and imported the most products from the group organo-inorganic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, nucleic acids and their salts, and sulphonamides, followed by medicaments and motor cars. On the export side, Slovenia overall traded the most with Switzerland and on the import side, with China and Switzerland as well.

In the first nine months of 2021, Slovenia’s exports increased by 19.1% (amounting to EUR 28.9 billion) and imports by 29.4% (amounting to EUR 29.7 billion) over the same period of 2020. External trade deficit amounted to EUR 0.9 billion, while the export-import ratio was 97.1%.
