With the sustainable development goals indicators we monitor Slovenia's progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development cover five crucial areas for humanity and the planet: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as its impact extends to all three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental).
Presented below are the values of selected indicators with which we monitor the progress in achieving the sustainable development goals for Slovenia.

Presented below are the values of selected indicators with which we monitor the progress in achieving the sustainable development goals for Slovenia.
PEOPLE – End poverty and hunger in all forms and ensure dignity and equality
- Compared to the previous year, the at-risk-of-poverty or social exclusion rate in 2020 increased by 0.6 of a percentage point. It was 15%, so about 309,000 people in Slovenia were at-risk-of-poverty or social exclusion or 16,000 more than in the previous year.
- In 2020, over EUR 12.5 million of government budget allocations for research and development were allocated to agriculture, or 25.4% more than in 2019.
- Boys born in Slovenia in 2020 can expect to live 77.8 years, while girls can expected to live 83.4 years. In 2020, life expectancy at birth of men, compared to 2019, decreased by 0.7 years and for women by 0.8 years.
- In 2020, 8.4% of adults aged 25–64 years participated in learning or 2.8 percentage points fewer than in 2019. The share for women was 9.5% and for men 7.4%.
- The share of women in senior management positions decreased by 2 percentage points in 2020 compared to the previous year and was 24.6%.
PLANET – Protect our planet's natural resources and climate for future generations
- In 2019, 67.5% of the population in Slovenia was connected to municipal waste water treatment plants with at least secondary treatment. In the last ten years, the share has increased by 11.4 percentage points.
- In 2020, a resident of Slovenia discarded on average 68 kg of food or 1 kg more than in 2019.
- Slovenia reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 16.5% between 1986 and 2019.
- Marine fishing catch in Slovenia in 2020 was 28.7% higher than in 2019; fishermen caught more than 155 tonnes of fresh fish products.
- In 2020, the farmland bird index improved (by 4.7 percentage points) as did the index of the generalists (by 1.8 percentage points) and of meadow bird species (by 0.2 of a percentage point).
PROSPERITY – Ensure prosperous and fulfilling lives in harmony with nature
- Energy supply in 2020 was 5.6% lower than in 2019 (it amounted to 6,371 ktoe); final energy consumption decreased by 9.2% and amounted to 4,489 ktoe.
- In 2020, the employment rate of the population aged 20–64 was 75.6%, 0.8 of a percentage point higher than in the previous year. For men it was 78.6% and for women 72.4%.
- In 2020, gross domestic expenditure for research and development represented 2.15% of gross domestic product of Slovenia, which was by 0.1 of a percentage point more than in 2019.
- In 2020, 3,548 asylum applications were submitted and 89 were granted. Compared to 2019, there were 7.1% fewer applications and 4.7% more granted applications.
- In 2020, 113 people died as a result of transport accidents, 8 fewer than in 2019.
PEACE – Foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies
- In 2021, the level of confidence of Slovenian citizens in the European Parliament was 52%. The level of confidence in the European Commission was the same. Compared to the previous year, the level of confidence in the European Parliament went up by 6 percentage points and the level of confidence in the European Commission by 8 percentage points.
PARTNERSHIP – Implement the agenda through a solid global partnership
- General government gross debt increased by 14.6 percentage points in 2020 compared to the previous year and amounted to 79.5% of gross domestic product.
