Collaborative economy in the field of tourism
The Internet has connected the world and changed the way we communicate, access the information and act. It enabled a growth of new business models, which played a key role in the world tourism development. Today, online booking systems not only enable quick accommodation reservation anywhere in the world but are also one of the key marketing and advertising tools in the field of tourism. International online booking platforms (e.g. booking.com) have enabled a global access to new customers not only for hotels but also for room providers and natural persons, who are now able to offer their holiday accommodations for a short-term rental on the global market. By offering private unused assets to other persons for a short-term rental in exchange for certain amount of payment, a collaborative economy concept is being developed and supported. A transport service, such as Uber, or short-stay accommodation via international online platforms, such as Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor, can be offered.
What is the scope of collaborative economy in the field of tourism in Slovenia?
In Slovenia, all short-stay accommodation providers – caterers, room providers, farmers and managers of marinas – who offer their short-stay accommodation to customers and are listed in the Business Register of Slovenia have to register in the Register of Accommodation Establishments and report data on tourist arrivals, departures and monthly accommodation establishment's occupancy in the eTurizem database. So tourist overnights stays generated within collaborative economy are already included in the national accommodation statistics on tourist arrivals and overnight stays.
The key data source on the scope of collaborative economy in the field of short-stay accommodation for tourists in Slovenia is the providers of these services, i.e. four major international online booking platforms (Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor). Short-stay accommodation renting for tourism purposes as a part of collaborative economy is on online platforms in the majority included in group 55.2. Therefore, the data on tourist overnight stays in hotels and similar accommodation (group 55.1) and camping grounds, recreational vehicle parks and trailer parks (group 55.3), which are also advertised via online platforms, are excluded.

On average 860 short-stay accommodation bookings (stays) via online platforms and 7,200 guest nights per day were generated. One booking (stay) represented on average 8 guest nights.

Data are published as experimental statistics, as Eurostat for the first time obtained the privately held data directly from international online booking platforms for analysing the scope of collaborative economy in the field of short-term accommodation rentals. The methodology of data analysis is being developed and therefore does not yet meet the criteria of official statistics.
Only aggregated data for the four platforms are released due to the protection of reporting units’ confidentiality.Additional explanations are available in the Methodological explanations.
