Correction – the data on organic farming 2020 are published again

Due to the changes in data in the administrative source and the resulting mistakes in the statistical data on organic farming in 2020 presented in the release on 6 July 2021, the mentioned data are published again. We apologise for the inconvenience.

4% fewer organic farms than a year ago

In 2020, the system of control of organic production comprised 3,689 agricultural holdings or 4% fewer than in the previus year. Of these, there were 3,358 agricultural holdings with the status of organic producers or 4% fewer than in 2019. The rest were agricultural holdings in conversion (331); in comparison with 2019, their number decreased by 1%. All agricultural holdings in the system of control of organic production in 2020 (3,689) represented, when compared to the first provisional data of the 2020 Agricultural Census, 5.4% of all agricultural holdings in Slovenia; those that already reached the status of organic producers (3,358) represented 4.9% of all agricultural holdings in Slovenia. 

Organic utilised agricultural area in 2020 2% lower than in 2019

Organic utilised agricultural areas (43,500 hectares) decreased by 955 hectares or 2% over 2019 (44,455 hectares). At the annual level, the area of organic permanent meadows and pastures decreased by 1,111 hectares (3%), of organic arable land increased by 11 hectares (0.2%), organic area for production of vegetables including melons and strawberries decreased by 3 hectares (1%), of orchards increased by 147 hectares (9%) and of olive trees increased by 0.7 hectares (0.3%). On the other hand, the area of vineyards decreased by 3 hectares (0.5%). By far the largest share (81%) of organic utilised agricultural area was still that of permanent meadows and pastures. 

Output of organically grown cereals about the same as in 2019, of organically grown potatoes larger

In 2020,  5,622 tonnes of cereals were organically produced, which is slightly less than in 2019, when 5,628 tonnes were produced. In 2020, there was less organically grown wheat and spelt (by 3%) and oats (by 24%) than in 2019. Organic production of barley and maize for grain increased: barley by 10% and maize for grain by 11%. Organic potato production increased by 18%, with the 2020 output of 1,632 tonnes and the 2019 output of 1,385 tonnes.

Organic fruit production higher than in 2019

Organic production of fruit was three time higher than the 2019 output (7,431 tonnes in 2020, 2,461 tonnes in 2019). Organic vegetable production including melons and strawberries decreased (1,700 tonnes) by 5% compared to 2019 (1,795 tonnes). Also, the total output on the arable land was lower by 6% (and weighed 26,408 tonnes).
Production of olives in organic olive groves was 56% higher than in 2019 (it weighed 659 tonnes). Production in organic vineyards was 13% lower than in the previous year (it weighed 1,914 tonnes). 

The number of most organic livestock decreased 

In 2020 there were 2% more organically reared cattle (37,904) than in 2019 (37,126). The number of organically reared pigs  (2,992) was 8% lower than in 2019 (3,252), and of organically reared sheep (31,695) 10% lower than in 2019 (35,225). There were also 8% fewer organically reared goats  (6,545) than in 2019 (7,085). The number of organically reared poultry decreased by 9% (87,972) over 2019 (96,641), of organically reared equidae (3,857) by 6% over 2019 (4,095), while there were 20% fewer organically reared rabbits (902) than in 2019 (1,131). We recorded a slight increase in the number of the honey bee colonies (by 1%; from 3,245 to 3,272), while the number of other animals (game reared in pens) increased by about 2%.

The weight of meat from animals in organic farming down by 7% 

The total weight of meat from organic farming decreased by 7% over the previous year. The weight of cattle meat decreased by 7% and of pig meat by 22%. The weight of poultry meat increased by 2% and of other animals’ meat (game reared in pens) by 92%. The weight of sheep meat (2.2 tonnes) was 6 times higher than in the previous year (0.3 tonnes). There was no equine and goat meat production in 2020.

Organic milk and other organic animal products

The production of organic cow’s milk in 2020 was 7,307 tonnes or about 1% less than in 2019, of sheep milk 193 tonnes or about 3% more than in 2019, and of goat milk 215 tonnes or 5% more than in 2019.
Compared to 2019, the production of honey went down by 19% and of eggs up by 14%.
