Annual increase in the total labour costs the highest in the last few years

At the annual level, the labour costs per hour worked in total increased significantly, the most in financial and insurance activities and in transportation and storage.

Labour costs much higher

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the labour costs per hour worked increased on average by 11.9% over the fourth quarter a year before (in the previous quarter they went up by 1.5% year-on-year). In the same period, earnings per hour worked increased by 11.2% and other labour costs per hour worked by 14.9%. The increase is the result of higher labour costs and fewer hours worked.

The labour costs per hour worked went up the most in financial and insurance activities (by 17.5%), followed by transportation and storage (by 16.7%) and accommodation and food service activities (by 15.9%). They only went down in education (by 0.2%).

In the third quarter of 2022, the labour costs higher in all EU Member States

According to Eurostat data, compared to the third quarter of 2021, in the third quarter of 2022 the labour costs per hour worked (agriculture, forestry and fishing excluded) increased in all EU Member States. They increased the most in Bulgaria (by 15.5%), followed by Hungary (by 13.8%) and Lithuania (by 13.5). In the same comparison, the labour costs per hour worked in the EU increased by 3.5%, in the euro area by 2.9% and in Slovenia by 2.0%.
