Financial reasons deterred Slovenian residents from travelling

In the observed period, a quarter of residents of Slovenia aged 15 or more went on a private trip. They made a million private trips and on those generated around 3.2 million overnight stays.

Fewer than a third of residents went on a tourist trip

In the 1st quarter of this year, 484,000 Slovenian residents (27%) aged 15 or more made at least one tourist trip (private and/or business). 

Among age groups, the highest share of those who travelled belonged to 25–44-year-olds (39%) and those who travelled the least can be found in the age group 15–24 years (11%). The average length of stay in Slovenia was the longest among the travellers aged 65 or more, while abroad the age group 15–24 generated on average the most overnight stays.

More than half of private trips generated in Slovenia

Domestic tourists made around 1.2 milion tourist trips, a million of them private. A little more than half of private trips (57%) were made in Slovenia. Among private trips abroad, most were to Croatia (35%), followed by Bosnia and Hercegovina (18%) and Italy (15%). 



In the selected period, 3.2 milion overnight stays were generated on private trips, 58% of them abroad. A private trip in Slovenia lasted on average 2.3 overnight stays and abroad on average 4.2 overnight stays. Most tourists on private trips preferred to stay with their friends and relatives (32%) or in hotels and similar accommodations (26%). 18% stayed in their own holiday home. 



On average a domestic tourist on a private trip spent EUR 89 per day. Daily expenses were higher abroad. 

Household finance the main reason for not going on a private trip

A third of those who did not make a private trip in the 1st quarter stated household finance as their main reason for skipping travel. A quarter of domestic tourists were deterred by lack of free time, 16% stated health reasons and other, while 12% did not feel the need to travel in this period. 

Same-day visits abroad mostly private

Slovenian residents all together generated around 433,000 same-day visits abroad, most of them private. Residents allocated the majority of their expenses for shopping and on average spent EUR 133 per day.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
In 2023 there was a change in data collection. Compared to 2021–2022 period, there was an increase in share of answers collected via online questionaire and a decrease in answers collected via telephone.
