Annual production and utilization of milk on agricultural holdings, 2022
Less milk produced than in the previous year
On about 11,300 agricultural holdings (same as in the previous year) around 625,000 tonnes of cows’ milk was produced in 2022, 2.3% less than a year earlier. As much as 92% of total produced cows’ milk was delivered from around 4,400 agricultural holdings.
The production of cows’ milk down
Around 625,000 tonnes of cows’ milk was produced in 2022, i.e. 2.3% or 14,600 tonnes less than a year earlier. Cows were milked on around 11,300 agricultural holdings. Around 4,400 agricultural holdings were producing milk for either sale by contract (to dairies or registered purchasers) or direct sale. On the remaining 6,900 agricultural holdings milk was mostly used as feed or for food (self-supply).
The majority of cows’ milk is delivered to dairies and other registered purchasers
The quantity of delivered cows’ milk represented 92% of all cows’ milk produced in Slovenia. The total quantity of delivered cows’ milk (around 575,000 tonnes) decreased by around 13,800 tonnes compared to 2021 (a 2.3% decrease). In 2022, cows’ milk was delivered from around 4,400 agricultural holdings (200 fewer than in the previous year). Milk production is mainly being abandoned on farms with smaller milk production. In the last six years, the number of farms with milk delivery has been decreasing by about 4% annually. Also due to this reason, the average quantity of delivered milk went up by 2.1% compared to the previous year and amounted to almost 131 tonnes of delivered milk per farm in 2022. Detailed data on the structure of producers of delivered cows’ milk are available in the SiStat Database.

The quantity of cows’ milk intended for animal feed is decreasing …
In 2022, around 31,800 tonnes of milk was used as feed or 6.5% less than in the previous year. The quantity of milk used as animal feed continues to decrease. There are two reasons for that: on farms with milk production milk substitutes are being increasingly used, while on the other hand on farms with sucler cows milk is sucked directly by calves (not milked).
… while the quantity of drinking milk for home consumption slightly increased in 2022
On around 10,600 agricultural holdings cows’ milk was used for home consumption. That was around 100 fewer than in the previous year. The quantity of milk used for home consumption increased by 1% compared to 2021.
Only 0.6% of cows’ milk sold directly on the farms
Only around 3,600 tonnes of cows’ milk was sold directly from farms. This is more than 8% less than in the previous year. Both the number of farms on which milk is milked for direct sale as well as the quantity of this milk have been declining since 2004.
Increased production of milk products on agricultural holdings
Around 7,700 tonnes of cows’ milk (1.2% of total milk production) was used for the production of milk products in 2022, which is 28% more than in the previous year.
Milk delivered from farms down the most in the western part of Slovenia
Due to drought, delivery of cows’ milk decreased by almost 20% in the Obalno-kraška statistical region. Almost 8% less was delivered in the Primorsko-notranjska statistical region, followed by Goriška, Pomurska, and Zasavska with 4%–5% drops in the quantity of collected cows’ milk. In other statistical regions the decrease was smaller than 3%, the smallest in Jugovzhodna Slovenija (0.4%).
The production of goats’ and ewes’ milk down
In 2022, almost 2,200 tonnes of goats’ milk was produced (a decrease of more than 8%). Ewes’ milk production amounted to almost 600 tonnes and decreased by more than 9%.
