Tourist arrivals and overnight stays, June 2024

Domestic overnight stays down by 3%, foreign by 4%

Domestic tourists generated almost 147,000 arrivals and just over 423,000 overnight stays, which was 3% fewer than in the same month last year. They spent the largest number of nights in three Slovenian coastal municipalities: Piran, Izola and Ankaran. There were still more women than men; they generated 2% more overnight stays than men, the largest number in the age group 65+ years. Women in this age group generated almost a quarter of all overnight stays of domestic female tourists. They also spent the most overnight stays in accommodation establishments, on average 5.4.

Foreign tourists generated almost 532,000 arrivals, about the same as last June, and 1.2 million overnight stays, 4% fewer. They spent the largest number of nights in municipality Ljubljana, followed by municipalities Piran and Bled. There were still more men than women; they generated 3% more overnight stays than women, the largest number in the age group 55–64 years. The average length of stay in accommodation establishments for this group was 2.2 overnight stays.


 
Almost a fifth more tourist from the United States of America than last year

The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Germany, just over 232,000 or 19% of all foreign overnight stays. They spent the largest number of their nights in municipality Bovec. The most represented age group was 55–64 years.

Tourists from Austria, who generated 99,000 overnight stays (8% of all foreign overnight stays), spent the largest number of their nights in municipality Piran. The largest number of overnights stays was generated in the age group 65+ years.

They were followed by tourists from Czechia, who generated 82,000 overnight stays (7% of all foreign overnight stays) and also spent the largest number of their nights in Piran. The most represented age group was 45–54 years.

Fourth to sixth placed were tourists from Italy, the United States of America and the Netherlands.

Compared to the year before, the number of overnight stays increased only for tourists from the United States of America (by 18%) and Czechia (by 2%).



Among types of municipalities, more overnight stays recorded only in municipality Ljubljana

As regards the types of municipalities, a third of tourist overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts, slightly more than 544,000, the most popular being municipality Bled. They were followed by seaside resorts (21%), health (spa) resorts (16%) and Ljubljana (15%).

Domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (37%), among them municipality Brežice was the most popular. In seaside resorts, they generated 32% of their overnight stays, the largest number in Piran.

Foreign tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in mountain resorts (39%), particularly in Bled, followed by municipality Ljubljana with 19% of foreign overnight stays.

Compared to the previous June, the number of tourist overnight stays went up only in Ljubljana (by 8%), where almost two thirds of overnight stays were recorded in hotels and similar accommodation establishments.

13% fewer overnight stays in camping sites

Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (671,000 or 41% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (24%) and camping sites (17%).

While the number of overnight stays in hotels was about the same as last June, the number went down in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (by 2%) and in camping sites (by 13%).

In the first half of the year more overnight stays

This year tourists generated almost 2.6 million arrivals (5% more than in the same period last year) and almost 6.4 million overnight stays (2% more). Foreign tourists generated almost 70% of all overnight stays. The largest number was generated by tourists from Germany, followed by tourists from Austria and Italy.

Domestic tourists generated 2 million overnight stays, 2% fewer than in the same period last year, and foreign tourists almost 4.4 million, which was 4% more.
