Milk: production more than 5% lower, export down, import up by almost 13%
In 2018 more than 168,000 tons of drinking milk were produced or more than 5% less than in 2017. The share of whole milk production has been increasing since 2010. In 2018, whole milk represented almost 81% of total drinking milk production. The production of semi-skimmed milk decreased by almost 20% over the previous year.
Almost 307,000 tons of milk were exported from Slovenia in 2018 (almost 2% less than in 2017), of that more than 230,000 tons of whole milk in bulk. The import of milk increased for the first time in five years. In 2018 it was more than 44,000 tons (almost 13% more than in the previous year).

Cream production almost the same for the fifth straight year
Dairies produced around 12,100 tons of cream for the fifth straight year. The production of cream with more than 29% of fat increased by more than 3%, while the production of sour cream decreased by more than 3%. Slovenia is a net importer of cream; in 2018 almost 5,300 tons of cream was imported and less than 900 tons of cream was exported.

Acidified milk production increased also in 2018
The production of acidified milk increased by 4% and amounted to almost 43,800 tons in 2018. The production of acidified milk without additives increased the most (by more than 5%), while the production of acidified milk with additives increased by less than 1%. The import of acidified milk decreased by 2% but still amounted to almost 13,000 tons. The export of acidified milk decreased to less than 16,000 tons (a 3% decrease compared to 2017).

In 2018 cheese import surpassed cheese production of Slovene dairies by more than 10,300 tons
The total quantity of produced cheese decreased by almost 400 tons (or more than 2%). It amounted to around 16,500 tons. Mostly the production of matured and processed cheese decreased, while the production of fresh cheese was only slightly lower. The import of cheese increased also in 2018 (by almost 8%) and amounted to almost 26,900 tons. In addition, the export of cheese increased: almost 10,300 tons of cheese were exported (a 2% increase over 2017).

In 2018 lower production of butter and dairy spreads and higher import
In 2018 dairies produced almost 3% less butter and dairy spreads. While currently the production of butter and dairy spreads is still higher than the import, this difference is decreasing due to increased import in the last few years. In 2018 almost 2,300 tons of butter and dairy spreads was imported. This was almost 12% more than in 2017 and three times as much as ten years ago.  The export of butter and dairy spreads in the last six years was below 200 tons.

Production of other milk products down by 7% compared to 2017
Mainly the production of ice cream decreased, while there was no production of concentrated milk and the production of milk powder was over 16% lower than in the previous year.

In 2018 more than EUR 169 million of milk and milk products was exported and more than EUR 173 million was imported
The total value of export increased by less than 1%, while the value of imported milk and milk products was almost 6% higher. The main Slovenian export product was still whole milk in bulk; its export value in 2018 was almost EUR 78 million. The main dairy import is still cheese. In 2018 the value of imported cheese was almost EUR 99 million (almost EUR 7 million more than in the previous year).
