Foreign tourists and their expenditures, Slovenia, July–August 2019
A foreign tourist staying in hotel or campsite in Slovenia during summer 2019 spent on average EUR 97 per day.
During the summer season of 2019, more than 70% of foreign tourists staying in hotels or campsites came to Slovenia for holidays. Foreign tourists in campsites spent EUR 58 and the ones staying in hotels EUR 138 on average per day for accommodation and other expenses within the country.
Foreign tourists most often come to Slovenia for holidays
89% of foreign tourists staying in hotels or campsites in July or August 2019 visited Slovenia for private reasons, 5% for business reasons and 6% were transit guests. The share of foreign tourists arriving for business reasons was again the highest in Ljubljana, but their share was halved (15%) compared to April–May 2019.
The main reason for visiting Slovenia was holidays, both for tourists staying in hotels and for those staying in campsites (73%). Tourists staying in campsites decided more frequently to visit Slovenia for recreation (7%), while cultural and natural sights were mostly chosen by tourists staying in hotels (8%).
More than three quarters of foreign tourists booked their accommodation in Slovenia on their own
35% of foreign tourists who were staying in hotels or campsites in Slovenia in July–August 2019 made reservations directly with the accommodation establishment, 31% used online booking systems, 12% made reservations through a travel agency, while 4% the reservation was made by others (school, employer, club, union…). Without any advance booking, 16% of foreign tourists came to Slovenia; most of them were residents of European countries. Residents of non-European countries most often chose to book accommodation and travel through travel agencies (more than 40%).
Foreign tourists staying in hotels made the most reservations through the online reservation system (44%), while tourists staying in campsites made reservations directly with the accommodation provider (46%), or they came to the campsite without advance booking (43%).
Most foreign tourists visited Slovenia in the summer season together with their partner or with family
Most foreign tourists who stayed in hotels or campsites visited Slovenia in the summer with their partner or spouse (44%), 31% came with family, 22% with co-workers or business partners, 11% with friends, 9% alone and 2% with other relatives.
Foreign tourists who decided to stay in Slovenian hotels spent once more than those who decided to camp
In July and August 2019, foreign tourists staying in hotels or campsites spent an average of EUR 97 per day for accommodation in Slovenia, for food and drink, transport within Slovenia, leisure and other activities and purchases. Non-European countries spend most per day (EUR 153). Germans, who generated the most overnight stays (57 % of them in campsites) of foreign tourists staying in Slovenia in July and August 2019 spent an average of EUR 64 per day. Foreign tourists staying in hotels spent on average EUR 138 per person per day, which is more than twice as much as foreign tourists staying in campsites spending EUR 58 per day. In addition, their expenditure structure differed: foreign tourists staying in hotels spent more than half of their daily expenses on accommodation, while those staying in campsites spent only one third of their daily expenses. They spent most (35%) of their daily expenditure on the purchase of food and drink.
