77th anniversary of SURS

The number of 77-year-olds is increasing. This year SURS is also joining their company.

On 19 August the Slovene National Liberation Council adopted a decision to establish the Statistical Office of Slovenia. On 77th anniversary of existence, we therefore searched for interesting data and coincidences related to the number 77.

At the beginning of 2021, there were 16,630 77-year-olds in Slovenia; 58% of them were women and 42% men. The number of 77-year-olds has increased by more than 2,000 since 2011. According to the population projections, there will be about 20,600 of them in Slovenia in 2100. The gender ratio is expected to be much more equal.

Names and 77
The name Julija is the 77th most common name among female residents of Slovenia, while the name Danijel is the 77th most common name among the male residents. At the beginning of 2021 there were several names that appeared exactly 77 times among the population of Slovenia: Ajnur, Arsim, Bela, Bilal, Bratislav, Januš, Lazo, Midhat, Paolo for men and Alea, Davorina, Margita, Mariza, Mejra, Mirna, Sebina for women.

In the last 77 years, the most common name among the female residents of Slovenia was Marija, and among the male residents Franc. Since 1999, the most common name for new-born boys is Luka. In 2020, 303 boys with this name were born in Slovenia. It is an interesting coincidence that in the same year there were also 77 residents with the surname Dončić, i.e. the same number as found on Luka Dončić's jersey.

28 times 77
There are 28 settlements in Slovenia with 77 inhabitants each. A total of 2,156 people live in them. Among these, the largest settlement in terms of area is Ostrožno Brdo in the municipality of Ilirska Bistrica, which means that it is also the least densely populated. This settlement also has the oldest inhabitants with an average age of 55 years.

In 2020, 77% of households could afford annual holidays outside home for all household members, including holidays at their relatives, summer home, etc., which was the highest share ever recorded in Slovenia.
