In 2020, Slovenia achieved the highest level of self-sufficiency in eggs (95%) and the lowest in fruit (36%)

In 2020, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average 129 kg of fruit, 119 kg of vegetables, 116 kg of cereals, 88 kg of meat, 64 kg of potatoes, 10 kg of eggs and 1 kg of honey for food.

Self-sufficiency rates higher than in 2019

Self-sufficiency rates in plant balances were higher in 2020 than in 2019. The self-sufficiency rate was 6 percentage points (p.p.) higher for fruit (36%), 5 p.p. higher for vegetables (48%) and 13 p.p. higher for potatoes (60%) and cereals (88%). Self-sufficiency rates in animal balances were also higher in 2020 than in 2019. The self-sufficiency rate for honey (67%) was 23 p.p. higher, for meat (84%) 3 p.p. higher and for eggs (95%) the same as in 2019.

More cereals and fruit produced than in 2019


In 2020, domestic cereal production reached 749,000 tons, which is 17% more than in 2019. Domestic consumption in 2020 was 848,000 tons, 1% lower than in 2019. Due to higher production and lower consumption of cereals, the self-sufficiency rate for cereals was 88%, 13 percentage points higher than in 2019 (75%).

Domestic production of all fruit reached 113,000 tons in 2020, which is 27% more than in 2019. Domestic fruit consumption was 312,000 tons in 2020, 4% higher than in 2019. In 2020, the self-sufficiency rate for fruit was 36%, which is 6 percentage points more than in 2019. Both years were marked by poor weather conditions for fruit production.

Lower average per capita consumption of meat, cereals and eggs

In 2020, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average the most fruit (129 kg), vegetables (119 kg), followed by cereals (116 kg), meat (88 kg), potatoes (64 kg), eggs (10 kg) and honey (1 kg). Compared to 2019, average consumption of fruit for food increased by 1 %, of vegetables by 2%, of potatoes by 3%, and of honey by 28%. On the other hand, average consumption of meat and cereals decreased by 3% and of eggs by 17%.
