The Pomurska statistical region covers 1,337 square kilometres and had 5.4% of Slovenia’s population in 2023. There were 85 inhabitants per square kilometre, while the average for Slovenia was 105.
In 2023, Pomurska had the oldest population structure in Slovenia, with the mean age of 46.6 years. Residents of this region were on average 4 years older than in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region, where the mean age of the population was the lowest. The share of residents aged 65 or older was the highest nationally at 25.0%, while the share of those aged 0–14 was the lowest at 12.9%.
The region stood out with the highest natural decrease (–5.4 per 1,000 population) and the lowest share of foreign citizens in the population (3.2%). There were more women than men; the only other such regions were Obalno-kraška and Osrednjeslovenska. Life expectancy at birth was the second lowest for boys and the lowest for girls. Boys born in 2023 in this region can expect to live 76.8 years, while girls can expect to live 82.8 years. The share of children born to unmarried mothers stood at 67.0%, with a higher rate recorded only in the Koroška region (67.5%). The mean age of mothers at childbirth in the Pomurska, Koroška, and Zasavska regions was 30.4 years, the second-lowest among all regions in Slovenia. This region has the highest share of children aged 1–5 included in kindergartens (84.4%). In the region, the share of the population (25–64 years) with basic education or less was the highest at 15.9%, and the share of the population with tertiary education was the lowest at 25.4%. It also had the lowest number of students per 1,000 population, at 28.
The employment rates for men (64.7%) and women (59.2%) were the lowest in Slovenia, as well as the gender gap (5.5 percentage points). The LFS unemployment rate stood at 3.8%, slightly above the national average of 3.7%. Average monthly net earnings of persons employed in the region amounted to EUR 1,336, which was 8% or EUR 109 lower than the national average.
The region contributed 3.6% of Slovenias gross value added. The GDP per capita amounted to EUR 20,360 or 33% less than the average in Slovenia. The lowest disposable income per capita was recorded in this region, EUR 14,792 or 11% below the national average. The region had about 8,700 enterprises, which on average employed 4.2 people.
Residents of Pomurska assessed general satisfaction with their life with the lowest average score of 7.4 out of 10. The same rating was given by residents of the Koroška region. The region was third in terms of the number of convicted persons (adults and juveniles) per 1,000 population (2.7). The Pomurska region recorded the second-highest rate of very low work intensity; 4.6% of people aged 0–64 lived in households where adult members (aged 18–64) worked less than 20% of their potential working time during the year. On the other hand, the region had the second lowest overcrowding rate; 7.6% of people lived in dwellings with too few rooms for the number of household members.
In this region, almost all wastewater from the public sewage system was treated before discharge—99.8%, the highest rate among all regions. Households received 35 m3 of water per capita from the public water supply, one of the lowest amounts per capita among the regions.
